Even before elections, Jayalalitha hums a discordant note

Though Left parties, MDMK and PMK have all come together on a single platform in Tamil Nadu by aligning with AIADMK, the unity between them is more fragile than it appears.

Even before general elections are over, one of the cracks in this phalanx is already showing up: their joint approach to the controversial Sethusamudram project. The 2,427 crore project envisages a 167 km navigable channel to link India’s west and eastern coast. It saves 36 hours of sailing time by not circumnavigating Sri Lanka. The only hitch: construction of this channel in its current form entails blasting the mythical Ram Bridge, which finds mention in Ramayana, believed to have been used by Lord Rama’s all conquering army to reach Sri Lanka. The BJP, among others, has raised objections over 'hurting Hindu sentiments.’

Mired in this politico-religious controversy, the project was stalled when 33 per cent of it was complete. AIADMK chief and former chief minister, Jayalalitha, once an ardent supporter of this project, has opposed it citing religious and environmental reasons. Left, PMK and MDMK, then allies of DMK-Congress, were vocal supporters of this project. Recently, when alliance partners came together at a public meeting headed by Jayalalitha to introduce their candidates, they preferred to keep their silence on Sethusamudram. At the meeting a copy of the AIADMK manifesto was presented to CPM General secretary. Typed in bold letters was her categorical announcement: AIADMK will scrap Sethusamudram.

The AIADMK manifesto says the project will render millions of fishermen jobless. In addition, the Ram Bridge would be destroyed, both ideas unacceptable. Virtually, the only beneficiaries would be Union Shipping Minister, TR Baalu and Chief Minister, K Karunanidhi. How has the Left taken it? Says AM Gopu, central committee member of the CPI, choosing his words carefully: ''It is the opinion of AIADMK. We have a different opinion about this. Right now our goal is to make a non-BJP, non-Congress government. If voted to power we will decide on a policy of consensus.’’ The DMK, whose election manifesto presses for an early completion of the project, is already crying foul. Party organ 'Murasoli’ has ticked off its former alliance partners for keeping quiet on a project that had caught everyone’s imagination just a year ago. While more than Rs 600 crores have been already spent, the Centre has set up a committee of experts with TERI chief, RK Pachauri, as head to examine an alternative route without damaging the Ram Setu. The report is expected by this year end, a long time after a government is in place at the Centre.

Is Jyotiraditya Scindia’s influence in Madhya Pradesh waning? It would appear so. In his battle of attrition with Pradesh Congress chief Suresh Pachauri, the younger Scindia looks like a certain loser. For the Bhopal seat, for instance, he first backed kayastha candidate Brajmohan Shrivastava. But when Pachauri got wind of this, he put up his own man for the job. Scindia, naturally, is hopping mad!

Istarted working at the age of 14, so I haven't really had the chance to travel on my pocket money. But there are places that I have been to where one needn’t spend too much but can still enjoy the beauty that the place has to offer.

One such place is Srinagar, where I had recently been for a photo shoot. It is exactly like it is oft en described – a paradise. Th e place is calm and the people are warm. Th ough I was on a shoot, the fi rst day was free and so I just took off in the car to the surrounding villages. Th e women, children and all village folk there were very welcoming and extremely hospitable. I loved the dinner I had on the last day of my shoot. A campfi re was organised and we had a feast with about 30 food items from authentic Kashmiri cuisine.

One thing that should not be missed is the kawa (tea), which has a very diff erent and refreshing taste. Th e Dal Lake is the main attraction of Srinagar. I don’t think any shoot has taken place there for the last many years but I was lucky to be there, thanks to the nature of my job. Th e beauty of the lake and the scenery is something that will be etched in my mind forever. Th e people in the houseboats and those living on the banks are quite warm. Th ey invited us to their houses and also off ered us food. It was really nice to see that despite being complete strangers, the locals were so warm and friendly towards us. I basically like scenic places so, apart from Srinagar, the place that I have really enjoyed being in is Kerala. It is a refreshing break from cities like Mumbai. Th ough a modern state, Kerala still has that old world charm to it. Th e people are relaxed and lead a very slow paced life. Kerala is very popular for its backwaters. But there's a lot more to Kerala than the backwaters. Th ere are forests, hill stations and beaches. It’s a great holiday destination for anybody who wants to unwind and relax.

This man’s political trajectory is more like that of a modern day politician than a film star. His baptism in politics was in the heady days when V.P. Singh rode high on the platform against corruption. Singh faded into oblivion, but Raj Babbar remained a staunch supporter of the ‘Janata’ cum ‘socialist’ ideology where the Congress was the enemy. He did win Lok Sabha elections from Agra and proved that he was no mere upstart by winning again. Babbar became a senior leader of the party headed by Mulayam Singh Yadav. But then, this is politics in India. The ‘villain’ of Insaaf Ka Taraazu revolted against Amar Singh and parted ways with Samajwadi Party. He is now a Congress candidate from Fatehpur Sikri.

Switzerland - Geneva in a flash

Speaking from experience, I can tell you that the so-called low-cost budget hotels aren’t really budget. The best option are youth hostels that can cost as low as $14 per night.

Accommodation taken care of, travel is the next biggest expense. A smart move is to get a travel pass, (and there’s a variety of them available) so choose the one that best suits your purpose. Better still, get your hands on a Rail Pass, in which are included busses and ferries. A day’s pass costing $35-$40 is not all that bad a choice for it gives you the option to travel anywhere in Switzerland. However, as long as you are confining yourself to Geneva, a Geneva Public Transport System day pass should suffice. And thanks to the efficient train service (you could set your watch to them), you’ll never find yourself lost. Finally, I could easily cut my food bills by half. If you can restrict alcohol consumption to what you buy from the convenience stores (Migros and Coop being not too far from wherever you might be), you’ll be cutting the food budget by half automatically. Look out for Coop (spoken as Co-op) and you can grab a quick bite and a refreshing drink in about $5-$10.

Geneva, by the way, isn’t cheap, but then nothing in Switzerland is. But in spite of that, I could scrape through in as little as $80 per day. Once there, you’ll realise that the biggest expenses in Switzerland are on accommodation, transportation and food... However, these can be cut down to a great extent without having to cut down on the experience, for the real beauty of Switzerland lies not in man-made marvels but in nature’s raw hues.

This isn’t exactly armchair travel we’re recommending. Peter Moore, an irrepressible travel enthusiast – having charted one short of hundred countries so far – and author of books including "Vroom By The Sea", "The Full Montezuma", and "The Wrong Way Home" – proves that perfect holidays can be had for a pittance, if you went to some virtual ‘sites’ first…

I just spent the weekend in a narrowboat in Wiltshire, England. The boat was moored on a canal on a lonely stretch of farmland in Stanton St Bernard. I had cows for neighbours and a clear view of a giant white horse carved in the green hills when I woke up in the morning. I ate gammon, eggs and chips for breakfast and spent my evenings huddled around a campfire on the bank, swapping local tales and cider in the cold, clear night with my hosts Mitch and Kristy.

It was one of the most incredible travel experiences I’ve had on my journey around the UK – a rare moment where I got to commune with the English countryside. And do you want to know the best thing about it? All it cost me was a flagon of cider that I bought cheaply from a farmer across the way.

I found Mitch and Kristy through www.couchsurfing.com, a web site that provides a safe forum for people with a spare sofa to offer other people somewhere to stay. It was started in 2004 by Casey Fenton, a young American software programmer looking for somewhere cheap to lay his head in Reykjavik. Now users create profiles that include photos, interests, languages spoken and a description of their couch. Both hosts and guests rate each other – just like sellers and buyers on eBay – making the sleeping on a total stranger’s couch a somewhat safer concept.

At last count the site offered 1,017,429 couches across 232 countries and 55,911 cities. There are four in Bhutan, 17 in Afghanistan and 15 in Libya. More traditional destinations like the US, Australia and Europe offer the choice of thousands.

It’s not always a couch. It can be a spare room in a house where the children have left home for university. The granny flat out back that isn’t used any more. Or in Mitch and Kristy’s case, a bed at the back of a recently restored narrowboat. The ‘couches’ range across all levels of comfort from a basic futon in the lounge room to something altogether more amenable, even luxurious.

Travellers who use www.couchsurfing.com have quickly discovered that it offers more than just an affordable bed for the night. Mitch and Kristy proved to be willing and knowledgeable guides to the local area, taking me to fairy trees where people tied ribbons to the branches for good luck and to hilltop tombs where ancient Pagan kings were buried, introducing me a side of the Vale of Pewsey that I would have otherwise missed.

State Congress leaders claim the general was escaping the heat generated by factional feuds and dissidence within the BJP. The adage “A stitch in time saves nine”, could’nt have applied better.

Leaving behind the memories of that stormy war of words on the reality show “Big Brother”, Shilpa Shetty put all her commitments on hold and flew down to London to meet the ailing Jade Goody. Unfortunately, Shilpa was denied permission to say good-bye to Jade since her condition had deteriorated and was heavily drugged. Shilpa had made India proud by winning the reality show, and we bet this gesture of hers will surely win a million hearts more.

Hindu activists stop Chaplin's statue from being erected

All his life he had given us clean laughter and a clear sense of democracy. That's Charlie Chaplin for you. But the Hindu culture mafia of Karnataka will not let his statue be erected in the state. Reason? He is a Christian! It is quite another matter that being a communist at heart, Chaplin practiced no religion and in any case, was born half Jewish. But Bharatiya Janata Party activists, led by one Suresh Batwadi shattered the dream of Kannada film director – Hemant Hegde – of erecting the 67-feet high statue at Byndoor.

Hegde had wanted to erect the biggest ever statue of the comedian, near the Someshwar temple in Udupi district, but had to change the venue after facing bitter opposition from the activists.

The statue, that would have cost about Rs 35 lakh, was needed for Hegde's Kannad film "Houseful". Initially, the director wanted to build the statue at a vantage point on a hilltop in Byndoor, but later he changed the location nearer to Someshwar beach, as the hilltop is restricted forest department land. “After getting permission from the district authorities and state information department on March 13, 2009, we started the foundation and welding works. Suddenly, around 20 activists led by Batwadi – claiming to be local Hindu activists – arrived and forcibly stopped the work. My plan was that after completing the shooting, I would gift the statue to the state tourist department,” says Hegde.

But Batwadi questioned the need for erecting the 'statue of a foreigner' near the Someshwar temple's entrance. “We do not want the statue just to get into the Limca Book of Records. We had not opposed this only because Chaplin was a Christian. Hegde used that as a gimmick for his film's publicity. But if he continues campaigning about us opposing 'a Christian statue', we won’t deny it,” says Batwadi.

Not only Hindu activists, even the Byndoor MLA, K Lakshminarayana, is opposed to the project, though not on religious grounds. He is against installing a human statue in a temple premise.

After being hounded out from Udupi district, Hegde has decided to change the location and has already applied for permission. "I hope to get permission from the state government to install the statue at either Gokarna Beach or Devbagh in the Karwar beach region," the director says. But chances of getting that crucial permission from the government departments seem bleak at this point in time.

Psychologist Sameer Pareikh thinks, the popularity of astrology columns is directly proportional to the level of insecurity in society. Earlier, people had their own family astrologer, but with modernization and the rise of the nuclear family, many don’t have even parents or close relatives to turn to for advice. Another reason could be that astrology rests on a bedrock of psychology.

With Live astrology and Tarot, the traditional practices has reached higher levels using technology. Astrologer Shiv Kumar claims that he receives more than hundred calls everyday. People call even at four in the morning,”Naukari kab milegi? Ya phir yeh sab jo duniya main ho raha hai kyon ho raha hai? Kab khatam hoga? Jaise sawal zyadatar log puchatey hain..”

Each region requires its own super sub-secretary of state to mobilise the coalitions

It is way too soon to say what policy breakthroughs Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton will be known for at the State Department. But she has already left her mark bureaucratically. She has invented new diplomatic positions that say a great deal about the state of foreign policy in these messy times. I would call them “The Super Sub-Secretaries of State.”

Clinton has appointed three Super Sub-Secretaries – George Mitchell to handle Arab-Israel negotiations, Richard Holbrooke to manage Afghanistan-Pakistan affairs and Dennis Ross to coordinate Iran policy. The Obama team seems to have concluded that these three problems are so intractable that they require almost full-time secretary-of-state-quality attention. So, you need officials who have more weight and more time – more weight than the normal assistant secretary of state so they will be taken seriously in their respective regions and will have a chance to move the bureaucracy, and more time to work on each of these discrete, Gordian problems than a secretary of state can devote in a week. Some scoff that this approach is a sign of weakness on Clinton’s part. I’d hold off on that. If she can manage this diplomatic A-team, Clinton’s experiment could make a lot of sense. It is a much more disorderly world out there.

After the 1973 Arab-Israel war, then secretary of state Henry Kissinger set the gold standard for mediation by negotiating the disengagement agreements between Israel and Egypt and Israel and Syria – the first real peace accords ever struck between those parties. But Kissinger had it easy. He had to just forge an agreement between one pharaoh (Anwar Sadat), one military dictator (Hafez Assad) and one overwhelmingly powerful PM (Golda Meir), whose Labour Party then totally dominated Israel. All three of Kissinger’s interlocutors could speak for their people and deliver and sustain any agreements.

That is not true today in the main theatres of conflict, where the parties are either failing states with multiple power centres – Afghanistan, Pakistan and Palestine – or strong states with governments so fractious and hydra-headed that they border on paralysed – Israel and Iran. The political struggles in these societies are so virulent today that until they are defused, it will be very difficult to make any deal between them. That is why you need sub-secretaries of state.

One of America's Founding Fathers, Thomas Paine, critiques Christianity and the Bible as a Deist. When Paine wrote, the idea of examining the Bible as a text objectively, let alone critically, was unheard of. Paine finds many of the internal contradictions and atrocities of the Bible and lays them out with withering scorn. In this letter, Benjamin Franklin respond to a manuscript Paine sent him that advocated against the concept of a providential God. A hero of the American Revolution, whose writings had influenced the French Revolution as well, Paine was criticised by all his fellow comrades for questioning Christian dogmas.

April 12, 1788, Philadelphia

Dear Friend

To bI have read your manuscript with some attention. By the argument it contains against a particular Providence, though you allow a general Providence, you strike at the foundations of all religion. For without the belief of a Providence, that takes cognizance of, guards, and guides, and may favour particular persons, there is no motive to worship a Deity, to fear his displeasure, or to pray for his protection.

I will not enter into any discussion of your principles, though you seem to desire it. At present I shall only give you my opinion, that, though your reasoning are subtile and may prevail with some readers, you will not succeed so as to change the general sentiments of mankind on that subject, and the consequence of printing this piece will be, a great deal of odium drawn upon yourself, mischief to you, and no benefit to others. He that spits against the wind spits in his own face.

But, were you to succeed, do you imagine any good would be done by it? You yourself may find it easy to live a virtuous life, without the assistance afforded by religion; you having a clear perception of the advantages of virtue, and the disadvantages of vice, and possessing strength of resolution sufficient to enable you to resist common temptations. But think how great a portion of mankind consists of weak and ignorant men and women, and of inexperienced, inconsiderate youth of both sexes, who have need of the motives of religion to restrain them from vice, to support their virtue, and retain them in the practice of it till it becomes habitual, which is the great point for its security.

And perhaps you are indebted to her originally, that is, to your religious education, for the habits of virtue upon which you now justly value yourself. You might easily display your excellent talents of reasoning upon a less hazardous subject, and thereby obtain a rank with our most distinguished authors. For among us it is not necessary, as among the Hottentots, that a youth, to be raised into the company of men, should prove his manhood by beating his mother.

I would advise you, therefore, not to attempt unchaining the tiger, but to burn this piece before it is seen by any other person; whereby you will save yourself a great deal of mortification by the enemies it may raise against you, and perhaps a good deal of regret and repentance. If men are so wicked with religion, what would they be if without it. I intend this letter itself as a proof of my friendship, and therefore add no professions to it; but subscribe simply yours,

Prof. Syed Haroon Ahmed, a distinguished psychiatrist analyses terrorism in Pakistan, historically speaking. Asked to explain this rising tide – and how it was affecting relations in the neighbourhood - Ahmed explains: “Historically, before the emergence of Bangladesh in 1971, nationalist forces based their policies to get their share from the federal government: In the then West Pakistan, they talked about Sindhudesh, greater Balochistan and Pushtoonistan and the most affected were the people of East Pakistan.”

According to Ahmed, after the emergence of Bangladesh, the military and civil bureaucracy in Pakistan encouraged religious parties, who were not in the mainstream politics. After the withdrawal of Soviet forces from Afghanistan religious fundamentalist parties were under the illusion that they had brought the downfall of Soviet Union – not the massive American and logistic support by the Pakistan government. “The next scenario is the mujahideen being dumped by America and later the emergence of Taliban. The former were used for fomenting insurgency in Kashmir while the latter were firmly supported by successive Pakistani governments. This policy has had a great impact on Pakistan society, which is now more or less in a state of civil war.”

Just how much has been the road travelled during the last 40 years? I would say it has undergone a metamorphosis. I remember when our comrade, Farooq, was badly injured during a police lathi charge at Karachi's national stadium. The Chairman of the PCCB, Essa Jafar, dropped into the NSF office to apologise, even though it were the same students who had disrupted the international match, the same day. Today, Pakistan’s society has been brutalised to such an extent that unknown marauders slaughter humans unabashedly and people are condemned to live in constant fear and anxiety.

Members of all communities in the village take part in the Nemothsava. Dr. Bilimale explains, “The person who performs Ali Bhuta belongs to communities called Nalike, Parava and Pambada and other such scheduled tribes. Its management is in the hands of the land-owning classes and upper castes like Bunts, Mogaviras, Gowdas, Billavas and Brahmins. Certain other communities are assigned the responsibilities of organising and mobilising the necessary resources for the ritual. Hence it is a community effort.”

The devout are unconcerned. “I am not bothered with any communal discord; I only believe in Ali Bhuta, who offers protection, prosperity, good crop and wealth for the entire community. So I prefer to go to Arikkadi every year. I have been visiting since my college days. With god’s grace and my efforts, I am in a good position now. And yet I am bound to say that after a year's experience in my present office I feel that the vital problems of India are being treated by H.M.G. with neglect, even sometimes with hostility and contempt. I agree in the main with what I think is your conviction, that in a mistaken view of Indian conditions and in an entirely misplaced sentimental liberalism we took the wrong turn with India 25 or 30 years ago; but we cannot put back the clock and must deal with existing conditions and pledges; and I am clear that our present attitude is aggravating the mischief.

May I give you a few instances of what seem to me a neglectful or unfriendly attitude to India and her problems?

In spite of the lesson of the Bengal famine, I have had during the last nine months literally to fight with all the words I could command, sometimes almost intemperate, to secure food imports; without which we should undoubtedly be in the throes of another famine, and probably of uncontrolled inflation, since without these imports I could hardly have held food prices from soaring as they did last year.

The recent increases of soldiers pay, which have added some £50,000,000 to our inflationary position, already precarious, and a considerable part of this sum to the Indian taxpayer's burden, was introduced without any consultation of India at all, or even warning; though we could have suggested means of easing the burden both for the British and Indian taxpayer; and Indian Members of Council would have felt no resentment if they had been consulted in advance.

I have, as you know, no axe to grind. I did not seek this appointment or wish it; but since I have been placed in a position of such immense responsibility for the future of the British Commonwealth which we serve. I am bound to place my views in front of you; "without partiality, favour or affection".

Even before the results were out the Congress was sure it was going to win. But what surprised even the most optimistic Congressmen was its massive seat tally of 206. The Grand Old Party had begun backroom manoeuvring months ahead of the elections. Digvijay Singh had proposed Jai Ho as the Congress slogan in April itself – the month when the party's campaign committee met to thrash out a viable poll strategy. He had said the slogan would send out a positive message to voters about its welfare schemes. But, three of the seven committee members vetoed it.

But after Rahul Gandhi endorsed it, AR Rahman’s Oscar-winning Jai Ho was heard at every pre-poll rally. The BJP's Bhay Ho, on the other hand, found no chord among voters who found it a poor imitation. A reflexive act that came from fear and calculation, rather than from the heart.

The idea to go it alone in UP and Bihar was exclusively Rahul's. When the SP came to the UPA's rescue after the Left walked out on it over the nuke deal, the Congress felt it was an ally which could be trusted more than many others. That was when the first talks over seat distribution between Amar Singh and Ram Gopal from SP and Digvijay Singh, Rita Bahunguna, Rahul Gandhi began. But they failed after Rahul got upset by Amar Singh’s condescending attitude towards the Congress. It was also not willing to give it the number of seats it had asked for. Rahul had reacted by saying, “Nothing worse can happen now. Either we have an honourable settlement or no settlement. We will go it alone”.

In an interview to TSI Salman Khursheed had said after the party’s abysmal performance in the UP assembly elections it had reinvented itself. The emphasis would be on following a "scientifically thought out" election strategy. Congress insiders say the changes made in the party structure were part of this new gameplan. The very day the delimitation commission redrew the demographic contours of the constituencies, Rahul was nominated general secretary in charge of youth affairs. The next step was to form ‘Future Challenges’. The committee was tasked to attract Congress’s captive votebank -- the minorities, Dalits and upper castes. Virappa Moily was made the forum's head, with Rahul as one of its members. But Moily was soon replaced by Diggi Raja, and the committee rechristened as ‘Opportunity Between Challenges’. New faces were brought in. As its core members, Pranab Mukherjee, P Chidambaram, Ahmed Patel, Ghulam Nabi Azad, Moti Lal Vora, Sam Pritoida and Janardan Dwivedi came up with many out-of-the box ideas. Besides, five more committees were set up to interact with economists, social scientists, minority leaders and farmers.

Situation of Sikhs

in Pakistan Very recently, the former President, Gen. Parvez Musharraf, had passed laws for the protection of the rights of minorities in Pakistan. With that, Sikhs can now join the Pakistan Armed Forces. This is a very positive step which proves that the minorities are taken care of. Now 5 per cent quota exists for minorities in every department. However, these steps have come a little late because our representatives did not really do much about the issues earlier. The talks of our welfare were not brought to the Assembly floor. Now, in Pakistan, with people becoming more active, aware and responsible, we have a good number of Hindus and Sikhs in the Parliament. So we don’t see the minorities being deprived of any rights. We believe in peace and all across the world, Sikhs have progressed because of that.

Voice against injustice

This is with reference to the cover story “25 Years after Operation Blue star" (TSI, June 1-7). It also touches upon the piece titled “Binayak Sen granted bail by SC”. Given that Indian society is characterised by multiple languages, religions, castes, communities, and that a strong, united, peaceful nation is preferable to a divided, embattled one, policies that promote justice, unity and peace should be preferred. This implies that secularism, equality, true democracy, justice should be pursued in view of long term common interest, and thus no community be discriminated. Indian society and polity can improve if the common masses raise their voice against such treacherous injustices, and strenuously strive for systemic changes like barring politicians facing serious criminal charges from contesting elections until they are acquitted by the judiciary.

TSI Five-O: Heartwarming, heartfelt and heart wrenching in the same breath

When you see the Korean War veteran Walt Kawolski (Clint Eastwood) in “Gran Torino” oozing sarcasm and bitter anger after his wife’s death, you wonder how you’ll endure him through the rest of the time. But he grows on you, just like his relationship with the Hmong teenager, Thao, next door does. Eastwood draws you in through his inimitable ‘slow build up’ directorial style and suddenly the nuances of the unlikely friendship and Walt’s becoming a father figure for Thao, who actually tried to steal his 1972 Ford Gran Torino, become superbly illuminated. From Walt lecturing Thao on relationships and dating to dispensing some philosophy (‘What was it like to kill someone?’ asks Thao and pat comes the reply ‘You don’t want to know.’), the character study is nicely balanced against the story which deals with moral values without being even one bit preachy. A dazzlingly touching tale.

Diplomacy - Iran is still being hounded

Consider also that our critics are silent about the nuclear weapons programmes of certain other countries. Only Iran is being targetted. This is most unfair. How can there be one rule for others, and another for Iran?

After the Iranian revolution the US lost its last chance of extracting political and economic benefits from Iran; why it never stops hounding us. It’s all to do with the power equations in Asia. Iran is a neighbour of Afghanistan and Pakistan, and we have a good presence in many other Asian countries as well. We have lots of documents to prove that the Iraq-Iran war had US support; and that they are answerable. We have been challenging each other for over 20 years, but just now we want change. We want peace. Only, thanks to American doublespeak this never comes to pass. The US says it wants peace with us, and then quite strangely proceeds to impose economic sanctions against us. And it uses all manner of propaganda to achieve this.

There is so much violence in the region – especially in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Tajikistan – and it is our firm belief that it is we who have the solution, not the western powers. India knows this well and in various ways endorses our stand. When I first came to India two years ago, the bilateral trade was about $8 billion, which has increased to $12 billion. We expect it to touch about $15 billion in a few more years. We are just waiting for the UN to permit use of other currencies for international trade and there are talks going on between banks and financial institutions.

The biggest boost for India-Iran relations could be the Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline project. We are giving half the capacity to Pakistan and half to India. This is really a very big project. Definitely there are some difficulties to be overcome; but just a year ago we had very fruitful talks during which many of the minor glitches were cleared.

All three parties concerned arrived at a perfect understanding. But unfortunately, for a whole year there has been no dialogue. There has been no response from the Indian side on this, but we are continuing the discussions with Pakistan. These got delayed due to the assassination of Benazir Bhutto. There were renewed concerns about security. We believe that if the three of us come together the project will further boost our relationship and help bring peace to the region.

I must repeat that we have very good relations with India. We also have deep cultural associations. Iran and India were neighbours even before India’s independence and many Iranian people are settled in India creating a mixed culture. This is a major reason why we can help each other.

One can’t help being awestruck when Bette Calman defies her age and performs yoga asanas that require incredible flexibility and strength. Our cover girl, Bette tells Anu Gulmohar how she became the super-supple great grandma!

I am 83-years-old but through yoga practice I’ve managed to stay fit. I’ve been doing yoga for 55 years, and I’ve been teaching for probably 40 years. I’ve been very strong and I still teach and take classes. It has kept me very flexible and well and happy, and so I say thank you to yoga. Everyday I thank God and yoga. It has kept me very healthy. My daughter is involved with yoga and even my great grandson practices yoga – he’s only three-years-old and he goes to a baby yoga class! He really loves doing yoga. And I do think that today we are all really busy and we need to practice yoga techniques like relaxing and being still – it charges you up physically, mentally and emotionally. I do practice the whole range of asanas; not every one of them every day though.

I wasn’t always a vegetarian but since the last 40 years, I’ve been a vegetarian. I eat plain food, a lot of salads, fruits and natural food. I have been very healthy. I haven’t had a cold or fallen sick ever. Yoga is a wonderful insurance policy!

In all these years yoga has not changed, but the method of teaching has. The classes are quite different now than what we had when we all first learnt the art. When I became a yoga student, there were only five people doing yoga – it was pretty new in Australia. And we did not see a book published about yoga for another 7-8 years. So we learnt from the master – straight from the master’s mouth – that’s how we grew. My master, Swami Karmananda Michael Bolin, introduced yoga in Australia about 60 years ago.

My husband runs a hotel and we had lots and lots of hotels, and I was involved in all of them, working with my husband. I’ve been a very busy person. I think we’ve got to have work and rest. We should not be running all the time but should want to be quiet too. I think that’s where yoga helped me so much, relaxation is something I really needed. Yogis say that if we don’t keep still then we’ll get sick. Sometimes, we’ve got to be still, we can’t be on the go all the time. I think that’s the most important lesson I’ve learnt – that you can do all the things, and also be still sometimes. Just take some time to find yourself.

Right now I’m nursing a husband who’s suffering from full-blown dementia and Parkinson’s disease and he’s not well at all, and he requires a lot of attention and time, and it is not easy. But because I am healthy, I can look after him, otherwise he would be in a home. So yoga has helped in many ways. Because I’ve kept myself healthy, I can help my daughter in her business – she runs a yoga centre in Williamstown. I can also baby-sit my great grandson.

I think how you live your life is important. Some people are sick all the time and when they live a long life, it cannot be very pleasant. Being healthy and being able to enjoy each day is important to me. It’s important to be positive and look forward to each day, because this day is not going to happen again.

Used by the armed forces in the war on militancy and then dumped once the job was done, Kashmir’s socially ostra-cised counter-insurgents and their families have hit a dead-end in life, writes Zubair A. Dar

Gripped by nervousness, she rushed out. Her aging limbs quivered in anxiety. Her son, Bashir Ahmad Parray, a government-sponsored gunman had left minutes earlier. Along with six other men, he had boarded a Gypsy to take a round of the area. As Hajra reached the market, a rumour came like a wrenching wave to her. They said her son was probably dead.

“The men said the Gypsy had been attacked. A mine blast had killed all the seven people on the vehicle, shopkeepers talked in whispers,” Hajra says. She says she fell there. Some neighbours later brought her home from the bus stand. “When I regained consciousness, the police was bringing out the body of my son from an ambulance.”

That evening in 1997, Hajra wept alone. It was seven years after Bashir Ahmad Parray, fondly called Bashir Yaar by his accomplices, had returned from across the line of control (LoC) with a gun on his shoulder and a pouch of bullets and grenades around his waist. He had gone there for arms training and spent more than a year in a camp. Hajra remembers that sunny afternoon when Bashir returned.

“Other boys who had gone for training along with Bashir had already returned. There were rumours that Bashir had been killed while crossing the border. But I never gave up hope,” says Hajra. “That afternoon, I was cooking for my family. I heard people talking aloud on the road outside. They said Bashir had come. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw him approaching with several other men.”

Bashir had made a tough choice by walking the rugged tracks across the LoC for arms training. He operated as a militant for three years. But a tougher choice he made in 1994 had no comeback. Led by Mohammad Yousuf Parray alias Kuka Parray, his militant organisation – Ikhwan-ul-Muslimeen – switched sides to fight militancy in Kashmir.

Jharkhand: A state in coma!

Mindless political opportunism and corruption by all its leaders has taken the state to the brink of disaster, says TSI’s Mahendra Kumar

Coal 62,08,485 tonnes; Iron 3,08,326 tonnes; Copper 1,08,690 tonnes (all proven reserves); Forest cover 23,605 sq km, or one-third of the state. And progress? Nil! When you place these figures together and ask where is this possible, hardly anyone would say anything apart from: “Jharkhand”. That is the sordid tale of the state where law and order is absent, where Maoists maraud with alacrity and where poverty stalks every village. Of the roughly 2.75 crore population, about 52 per cent live below the poverty line, despite the fact that Rs 1,86,000 crore worth of industrial agreements have been signed.

The demand for Jharkhand as a separate state was raised even before independence, because people in the tribal-dominated southern parts of the then Bihar felt strongly that all the cakes were being eaten in northern Bihar. But, those also were the sentiments of the people of what are now Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh. Remarkably, all three new states were created at the same time, all three are resource-rich, yet, Jharkhand is immersed in poverty and backwardness, but Chhattisgarh and Uttarakhand are merrily marching towards a glorious future.

Jharkhand was formed on November 15, 2000, and Babu Lal Marandi became the first chief minister. But immediately thereafter, political squabbling ripped the nascent state. Corruption and lawlessness became the order of the day. Marandi was followed by Arjun Munda on the CM’s seat. But the 2005 state Assembly polls resulted in a hung house. At this juncture, Shibu Soren of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha managed to clamber on to the CM’s seat but was pulled down just after nine days. Again, there was a political vacuum. To ensure that MLAs of his faction do not desert him, Munda then flew them off first to Delhi and then to a magnificent resort on the outskirts of Jaipur.

I wholeheartedly agree with Prof.Arindham Chaudhuri that Obama has displayed the qualities of grassroot leadership in the steps to bring down the financial crisis. It is a sorry truth that the American claim of being most developed country is not supported by its syestem of dealing the corporate sector. The crisis shows the frail and fragile corporate system of America which has made the whole world face the present scenario. The whole world including India is facing the crisis of continous job loss, thanks to the American flawed system. India needs to be more cautious about its financial liberalisation policies and take a guideline from Obama's approach to save people from feeling more heat.

The recommendations further fuelled the fire, with the agitation-prone employees' unions saying that too many of their genuine grievances have been left unaddressed for too long. The restive employees' unions have long been demanding upping the retirement age to 60 from the current 58. There are also issues like regularisation of daily wagers and paying salaries for semi-government employees.

The government recently appointed three different committees to look into these demands. While two of them – one headed by the former economic advisor Dr Haseeb Drabu and the other set up by the finance ministry – have not supported the idea of rise in the age of retirement, the committees have suggested a framework to resolve the other issues.

It is, however, lack of resources that is giving the government a headache. Former chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad last year said that resource-starved J&K is largely dependent on the central government for wages. The state government has once again approached the Centre for financial succour. Unless the Union Finance Ministry announces a bailout package for the state government, the entanglement is not likely to end soon, analysts assert.

A meeting with Omar Abdullah, which employees desperately seek, may bring a temporary respite. But long-term peace between the state and its employees seems unlikely unless the proposal is accepted by the state.

And after a year and several committees to decide on ‘winning candidates', open squabbling has ensured that candidates for most seats are uncertain. This is why RSS’ pointsman in the BJP, Ram Lal stressed on presenting a united face, at least during polls, and Advani lamented the “self-goal” by some leaders during the Delhi and Rajastan polls last year. BJP’s woes have been aggravated by its allies who are demanding major shares in the poll pie. Biju Janata Dal, having trounced the BJP in Bhuvaneshwar civic polls, is demanding more seats on the plea that in the wake of anti-Christian violence in Kandhamal, BJP will fare poorly in the minority-dominated areas. Janata Dal (U) too has spught more seats in Bihar. But the BJP is most concerned about the size of its alliance. The party won the 1999 parliamentary polls with the help of 22 alliance partners. It lost the 2004 polls since the number of its allies had dwindled to six. This time again, Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress has deserted NDA for the Congress in West Bengal, further squeezing the saffron-led alliance. Yet, Ravi Shankar Prasad puts up a brave face, “We have just been joined by INLD in Haryana and AGP in Assam. Few more may join us soon.”

With Indian Premier League hosting T20 between April 10 and May 18, almost coinciding with the LS poll itinerary, BJP would need more than just multi-taskers to make people abandon cricket and come out to vote. Its only solace is: the Congress, too is grappling with similar problems.

As I watched "Slumdog Millionaire," and I did it before reading your article, I fully endorse all your disgust and disappointment. It is an insult to all Indians in general and Hindus in particular. In fact, Danny Boyle has repeated what the British did for about 200 years. When a little boy dressed as Lord Ram looks abhorrently at Jamal, the subtle message is that the Hindu Gods or his worshippers in this country are intolerant of Muslims. This state of affairs has been endorsed by the State (signified by the policemen being silent observers of the massacre). Paradoxically, Jamal is unable to recognise Mahatma Gandhi's picture on a 1000 rupee note. It is a pungent remark on Gandhi and the respect he has among his countrymen. Jamal, with an English education in primary school, however, remembers the names of the Musketeers. Mother India portrayed a grimmer reality of India's poverty and in an unprejudiced way. But the film was not appreciate that much. Probably, because it did not win a Golden Globe.

Isolated attempts to form an exclusive Muslim party have already taken shape in some parts of the country. The Muslim Ittehad United Front, formed last year, bagged four seats in Aurangabad Municipal Corporation polls. More significantly, Indian Muslim Congress Party (IMCP) won 27 out of 71 seats in Malegaon Municipal Corporation elections held nine months after the blasts that claimed 30 lives in 2006. The IMCP, formed by a cleric Mufti Ismail – who had played a significant role in maintaining peace after the September 2006 blasts – fought the elections on a development-oriented agenda.

But, other similar attempts have not had much success. Respected Shia leader Kalbe Jawaad’s attempt to forge a political outfit in the wake of Ajmal’s success in Assam came a cropper, though it was backed by the Imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid, Maulana Ahmad Bukhari. But Bukhari himself lost his clout by issuing an appeal in favour of the BJP during the 2004 Parliamentary elections. “Some people ignore the welfare of the community at large and instead are swayed by their own vested interests. We know the reasons for such acts and want the community to be aware of such gimmicks,” says Haroon Mojawalla, the head of Khair-e-Ummat Trust of Maharashtra.

For organisers, the time between January to March is suitable for these adventures. The preparations get underway in December itself, when training for the birds includes flight drills of up to 13 hours, and repeated practice to re-enter the loft at the master’s place. Only those pigeons that are able to meet these challenges get to contest in the races. Pigeons aged above between 6 months and 10 years are eligible entrants, though average racing career rarely exceeds three years. They are essentially vegetarians: nuts, wheat, soft flowers, green gram, corn etc keep them flapping fit for the long flights. Members spend Rs 500 per month on the diet of the birds.

Over the last few years KRPC has organised the race in many locations at Karnataka, the starting points being as far afield as Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamilnadu and Maharashtra. Last year, more than a 1000 pigeons proved their pluck in races conducted at Anantpur (Andhra Pradesh); Guntkal, Raichur, Gulbarga (Karnataka) and Wardha, Nanded (Maharashtra). This year, the races at Anantpur, Karnool, Shahad Nagar and Nanded have been accomplished. While the Wardha race will take place this month, the much awaited Bhopal race is scheduled for March. The one over the longest distance, the latter is to be conducted under the aegis of South Indian Federation of Racing Pigeon Club, so that both the constituent Karnataka and Tamil Nadu Club pigeons would jointly contest from Bhopal.

This refers to "A few good men & women" (TSI, Jan 19-25). A brilliant piece in an era of cash for query and bundle of note packets being exchanged to win the trust vote in the Parliament. This honest breed of politicians, cutting across party lines, not only survive but are sent to the Parliament by the electorates again and again, proving that honesty still pays. It goes on without saying that if you care for the people, they will, in turn, take care of you. Be sincere and simple. Raise people's problems and be with them in the good and the bad times. It's no surprise that the people electing them, rejecting money and muscle power, is a great step towards strengthening democracy in India. Hope, the numbers increase in the future.

An IT company regularly employs disabled persons

At a time when IT companies are sacking people, Laser Soft Info Systems (LSIS), a leading banking and financial services IT company, employs one hundred disabled persons among its 500 strong workforce. Suresh Kamath, MD, started LSIS in 1986. Within 20 years, it has grown and is teaching other companies a lesson in corporate social responsibility through its employment policy. This policy ensures right to employment to disabled persons as much as it does to able-bodied candidates.

At Valasaravakkam, before entering the office, one cannot miss rows of wheelchairs at the parking lot. Once inside the office, one witnesses employees on wheelchairs moving from one computer to the next on the office’s ground level which is designated to the disabled employees. Prakash, an employee, cannot walk since birth. He is working on developing a hospital management software. “After my BSc in computer sciences, I joined this company. My initial salary was Rs 5,000. Today, after four years, my salary has increased to Rs 25,000 per month. I’ve also managed to help four other disabled people get employment here,” he says with evident pride.

The producer-multiplex owner conflict is hurting all

If 2008 turned out bad for the Indian film industry, 2009 is proving worse! The first quarter of the year is already over and there is only red splattered all over on bollywood balance sheets. Except for Raaz2 (which fared average), no bollywood film released in the first quarter of 2009, has done credit to the efforts of the clapperboys and costs. CC2C, Delhi 6, Tasveer 8x10 & many more flicks also met a similar fate, and if that wasn't enough, the tussle over revenue sharing, between multiplex owners and film producers, have made matters worse!

Currently producers get 40-48% of the ticket sales in the first week, a share which falls in consequent weeks. The producers are now asking for a 50% share throughout, irrespective of the films’ performance, budget, starcast et al. “Equal profit sharing is practised globally. So this is a fight for justice,” says filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. But Tushar Dhingra, COO, Big Cinemas, counters, “Before the advent of multiplexes, rent to the theatre owner was fixed irrespective of whether the movie was a hit or flop. Therefore, the risk lay completely with the producer. Now, the theatre owners also bear part of the risk.” So what has been the reaction from the producers? Well, no new release has happened in multiplexes since April 4, 2009, and for now, the producers have decided to stick to this decision until a 50-50 revenue sharing scheme is finalised.

So while on one end, the film producers and distributors are busy with the dogfight, flicks are taking the hits; the first casualty being Aa Dekhen Zara (ADZ) which was released only in single-screen theatres. The reason clearly being that the two parties couldn't arrive at an agreeable revenue sharing scheme for the film. So how much has the film suffered so far? As per estimates, ADZ has collected a petty Rs.2 crore at the box office. Now compare that with the collection of a small budget film like A Wednesday, released in September 2008, which milked between Rs.8-10 crore! “Had ADZ been released in multiplexes too, the collections would have been many times better,” asserts a media analyst. The success of any film today depends a lot on the multiplex audience.

“Our greatest competition is with ourselves.” Or “Our greatest challenge is how to continue to provide value to our customers.” How often is it that you have heard our good ol’ CEOs utter these angelical words, and how many times have you believed them? We hear such statements, albeit rephrased in many different ways, just about all the time; and as far as believing them goes, all we can say is that being politically correct hardly remains a domain exclusive to politics!

That’s because there is no business establishment that can survive in this marketplace by just looking at the customer’s needs. A company has to view its entire business environment in a holistic context, and competition, in particular, has to be studied closely, all the time. Even as we speak, there are new competitive benchmarks being consistently set in every industry, and it’s quite obvious that all of them do not come from one company. There are precious few companies like GE, which develop benchmarks far ahead of the competition and can afford some complacence (even GE hasn’t been immune in fact!). And there are times when these benchmarks can make all the difference between winning and losing. So there is no reason to disbelieve the fact that if companies just focus on customers and turn a blind eye to competition, they are headed for testing times.

And economic slowdown is the mother of innovation. When the pie gets smaller, competitors search for newer ways to grab a greater share, and it becomes all the more important to outmanoeuvre them when and where it counts. But the key question is – what will work? What magical formula can a company use to win in the downturn, or even to insure itself better against future downturns?

The Consumer Always Comes Last

April 1, 2009 could well turn out to be a red letter day (due apologies to Prakash Karat) for Indian consumers. Following a directive from the Reserve Bank of India, you and I can withdraw money from any ATM anywhere in India without having Rs.20 to Rs.50 deducted from our accounts. Banks opposed it fiercely, even issuing threats that they will be reluctant to expand their ATM networks if they can’t impose ‘transaction’ charges. For a change, their lobbying efforts with the RBI have failed, and the latest move will be a huge convenience for Indian consumers.

This is a rare victory for the Indian consumer. Even now, banks have surreptitiously imposed such crazy conditions that an average bank account holder will, more often than not, pay extortionate charges. Take the little known policy whereby a bank account holder cannot access her own bank’s ATM more than thrice or four times a month without paying ‘transaction charges’. The banks say this is to discourage unnecessary crowding at ATM counters. Years ago, the same banks used the same logic to deny account holders access to a bank branch. Account holders were encouraged to use ATMs and actively discouraged (sometimes even prohibited) to use their own bank branch for basic transactions. Consumers were told then that unlimited access to ATMs will be better than waiting in a queue at a branch. But then, unlimited access to ATMs was soon restricted. This is just one example of how banks routinely fleece their consumers. Anyone with a credit card or a deposit in a private or multinational bank will have horror stories.

It is not just banks. Telecom companies, passenger car makers, FMCG companies, commercial aviation companies, insurance companies… just about any enterprise in India with an interface with a consumer ends up fleecing her. Sample a few more examples. A study found that more than 80% of the new electronic meters installed by a private electricity distributor in Delhi were so hi-tech that they ran faster than actual electricity consumption! Of course, the hapless consumer has to first pay an inflated bill and then argue because his power will be cut off otherwise. From out of the blue, private airport operators in Bangalore and Delhi started charging a Rs.200 plus fee from every passenger. This was never a part of the lucrative deals they had signed with the government. And yet, the Civil Aviation ministry – tasked with protecting the interests of the Indian air traveller – connived with private operators to loot the Indian consumer.

In theory, the Indian consumer can approach a consumer court for relief. But in practice, large companies and their battery of lawyers have made the process a frustrating grind for the consumer. Consumer courts were formed to ensure that cases can be settled without lawyers. That basic philosophy has become a joke. In any case, even if a consumer court passes an order favouring the consumer, other Indian courts now promptly – and distressingly – provide relief to the company. Very soon, consumer courts could resemble the average Indian court, where a case might be settled after the litigant has died.

Sure free access to ATMs is a great move. But without much, much more, it could well be an April Fool gesture!

In fact, the time-line between the beginning of the First World War and the end of the Second World War and furtheron after it, has been the most intriguing period in terms of the transformation of nation states into nationalistic states. While four established empires – namely Russian, Ottoman, German and Austro-Hungarian – were washed away by the tides of the First World War, this period also witnessed the emergence of the violent form of ethnic nationalism which almost destroyed the world with the rise of the German Nazis and their fanatic obsession with the obliteration/subjugation of Jews and in fact anyone who – according to them – was not a pure Aryan.

Incidentally, the way Hitler galvanized a disparate Germany, which was humiliatingly defeated in the First World War, into a reckoning force vindicated the fact of how potent a force the war-cry to resurrect the lost pride of fatherland (or motherland) could be. Nazis became a spent force for good after the defeat of Germany in World War II, but ethnic nationalism continued. Oddly, that the Jewish State succeeded to an extent against all ‘odds’ and emerged as a pioneer in high end technologies is also proof of how nationalism drives the fanatic passion to not only survive, but consolidate and fortify. Had it not been for the ethnic pride and the quest to wipe the humiliation of the past, Japan and Germany wouldn’t have had such incredible resurrections (both economic and political) in just a few decades’ time to become the second and third largest global economies respectively, their decimation in the Second World War notwithstanding.

These issues raised questions over the extent of control Obama has on the intelligence and security establishments of US. One has to remember that US is nothing much without its key intelligence agencies and the world’s most sophisticated armed forces. Amidst all these, the arrest of two Tennessee guys- Daniel Cowart and Paul Schlesselmen who were planning to kill 102 African-American children and then assassinate Obama vindicates the resurgence of white racists and reminds the assassination of another American President John F. Kennedy. It’s better to hope less than to expect that Obama can completely end racism. He can at best abolish it from English language. If he does, it would just be the word and not its essence that would be wiped from earth and especially from the US. Poor Obama.

Moreover, the Indian logistics industry is dominated by unorganised players. Transporters with fleets smaller than five trucks account for over 75% of the total trucks owned and operated in India and make up 80% of revenues. Even the freight forwarding segment comprises thousands of small customs brokers and clearing & forwarding agents, who just cater to local cargo requirements. So, considering this, the biggest challenge for organised players like Safexpress will be to take the growth forward. In fact, “one can even see a major phase of consolidation in the sector in the coming times,” avers Pradhan.

No doubt Safexpress has generated a decent level of loyalty and trust towards the brand in the past few years, but with the sudden flurry of international behemoths like FedEx, DHL, TNT, et al, and considering their edge over domestic players, particularly because of their big pockets, players like Safexpress will definitely find it hard to retain clients.

However, the company has bagged only 8% market share in India till date, in sharp contrast to Nokia’s 70% market share. Still, SEIL is confident on its handset strategy in India, with its focus on low-end market.

Till now, SEIL had deployed a strategy of premium positioning, but now it would indeed make sense for the company to focus on the masses. Moreover, Samsung must revisit its communication strategy much like the way they have changed their communication for handsets; and efficiently target different sets of customers through differentiated marketing strategies. Clearly, Shin would have to open more battlefronts to improve the company’s standing in the country.

Conclusively speaking, Buffett is still the man calling all the shots, and one who still owns 32.68% of Class A shares at Berkshire (with super-voting rights); and he’s also the Chairman of Berkshire. Buffett could very well choose to give away his throne to any of the three we mentioned earlier; or to 82 year old Charlie Munger (his right hand man and billionaire partner), or to David Sokol (Chairman, MidAmerican Energy Holdings Company; a multi-billion dollar Berkshire company). Or even to his eldest son Howard Graham Buffet (who serves currently on Berkshire’s board of directors) or to his younger son Peter (well, a musician). But you know what, he won’t! If even a line of what he told Daily Telegraph has to be believed, Warren will hold on steadfastly to the reins of Berkshire till the day he dies. And then guess what, it’ll be the Berkshire board that’ll decide the successor, irrespective of Warren’s letter.

But hey, really, if Ajit Jain can be the one, why can’t it be me? Think about it, why not? Well, I have insurance experience (auto industry; especially motorcycles; in fact, one motorcycle, mine); I too lead 30 odd people (at least, I’ve found them really odd); and even my godforsaken boss calls me every night (and she’s not even a woman, for Chrissake)! Is B.S.Nagesh India’s answer to Sam? In his vision to revolutionise retail buying, surely yes. In his vision for making Shoppers Stop a world standard, perhaps not. That brings us to the next question. Is Shoppers Stop India’s answer to WalMart? Not yet; and strangely, mostly because of reasons that seem to be beyond their control (or are they?). And that’s where the pain starts; of being Shoppers Stop, of being B.S.Nagesh, of operating in an industry and environment that can only support you this much, of being enmeshed in a vision that is entrapped within not only the limits of the sector’s operations, but also of the vision of the government.

Despite my evident undercurrent of the critic’s clarinet, I accept that Nagesh (and even Shoppers Stop for that matter) is the best that could have happened to India in a century of retailing. Well, at least until the past year (I’ll come to that later). There can be no better logic that justifies this status than the manner in which a single man and a brand jumpstarted the view of India to retail.

Shoppers Stop. All is going hunky dory when a sweet little company called Reliance wakes up one fine day in 2008 and increases its electricity charge for such projects by about 65%! How can Shoppers Stop handle that cost factor?

#2 – Service & Sales Tax My analysis became more flummoxing when I noticed that while Shoppers Stop pays varying levels of sales taxes in different states, the MRP system forces them to charge a single price across states, thus ensuring disuniformity to bottom lines. Nagesh adds another perspective, “Because of MRP, I can’t even pass on the service tax cost on to the consumer, unlike other organisations like consultants who can easily pass the component on.”

Having said that, there are costs that Shoppers Stop can control, and should directly target for the short term.

Since the end of the Second World War, the global defence industry has played a crucial role in not just shaping the geopolitical strategies of powerful countries, but also in being a crucial pillar of the concerned economies. SIPRI (Stockholm International Peace Research Institute) states that since the 1950s, US alone has exported arms worth $566 billion to other countries. This incidentally is based on the 1990 constant price of dollar to bring out a uniform TIV (Trade Indicator Value). At current prices, the value could be nearly three times that. Since 1992 alone, US has sold arms worth $142 billion. Compared to US, the erstwhile Soviet Union, since the 1950s, has exported arms worth $461 billion; followed by UK with $107 billion, France with $100 billion, while the new avatar of USSR, Russia, since the disintegration of USSR in 1992 has notched up arms sales of $67 billion till 2007.

Perhaps the most dramatic paper that electrifyingly shook age-old perceptions was the one presented in 2004 by stalwart professors Belen Villalonga (Harvard Business School) and Raphael Amit (Wharton), who analysed “all” Fortune 500 firms and proved unequivocally that not only do the stock returns of family firms consistently show higher levels of risk, but also that “when ‘descendants’ (of founders or founding families) serve as CEOs, firm value ‘is’ destroyed!” If one presumed that modern corporate governance norms were enough to mitigate the damage caused by family successors, Villalonga and Raphael prove further that descendant CEOs “destroy value whether or not the family has control-enhancing mechanisms.” While the most noted 2003 research by London Business School proffered that family businesses “risk their growth potential if they fail to recruit from outside,” most amusing was the Economist research at the turn of the century that commented how the death of a significant inside shareholder resulted in a shareholders’ wealth increase (“the larger the deceased’s shareholding, the bigger the subsequent rise!”). Strangely, this finding gets humungous support from the subsequent benchmark 2005 research paper titled ‘Firm Performance...In Family Managed Firms’ by David Hillier (Leeds) and Patrick McColgan (Aberdeen), which documents positive stock price increases to the “announcement of the sudden death of a company’s founder executive.” But more seriously, they also indisputably brought out how family CEO successions are almost always followed by dramatic declines in not only stock performance, but dangerously, even operating results!

Haarde's popularity fell steeply in public ratings after Iceland’s deeply indebted economy fell apart in the midst of the global debt crisis. As the crown (Iceland's currency) fell, the government was left with just one option: to seize control of its three major banks. This crisis has been a tremendous let-down for 320,000 Icelanders, whose rising incomes and prosperity had left them quite unprepared for this. "What this essentially means is that this is a country without a government, so it's impossible to say what might happen next,” says Gunnar Kristinsson, Professor at Iceland University. It is anticipated that the economy will shrink by 9.6% in 2009, while unemployment will touch 7.8%.

Bailouts by neighbouring countries and IMF are failing to prop up the economy. The new PM Johanna Sigurdardottir is asking Central Bank governors to resign and is building consensus for a union with EU. As other options fail, this indeed seems to be the best way forward.

AROUND THE CORNER: A short drive from the resort, Trunk Bay is one of the Caribbean’s most frequented beaches. The relics of 1870’s Annaberg Sugar Mill which has been refurbished, is the best allusion of the cultural history during the colonial and post-emancipation era. Even the remains of the first Moravian church, built in 1749, can be surveyed at Estate Bethany and of course the famous National park. FROM UNDER THE CARPET: There are very limited options for reaching the hotel, relying mainly on ferries and boats. Lack of modern civic amenities (namely TV and in-room telephone) may dampen the spirit of the average couch potato.

IN ESSENCE: A true escape and a great honeymoon destination, the Caneel Bay will pamper you more than your mom ever could. However, the resort chooses to defy the traditional stereotype and remains conspicuously deficient of modern facilities, digital entertainment and the maddening pace of the world.
