Monojit Lahiri zeroes in on this amazing liaison between two distinctly different camps – Bollywood and Art Cinema!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Question is: who is doing what for whom and why? The simple (but often undisclosed) – truth, is Fatal Attraction. A magnetic pull that stems from deep within but dare not take shape until the moment arrives. A time when the star has enjoyed it all, had his fill of the perks of stardom and is ready - for a new and different experience that promises to fetch him/her artistic satisfaction as opposed to commercial gain. At another level most stars – at some point – wise up and realise that striking poses and glamorous caricaturing is NOT acting and pine for the real thing which can only be provided by grass-root, visionary directors NOT cosmetic dream peddlers. They also (secretly) yearn for cerebral superiority and snob appeal. The very fact that a star is working for a Ray or Benegal, Nihalani or Aparna Sen, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Deepa Mehta, Meera Nair, Rituparno Ghosh, even Sanjay Leela Bhansali is reflective of class – something that is not exactly associated with the mainstream Bollywood products!

She continues, “May be the tests have been conducted at the time of the marriage but what about complacency that sets in after conducting them once.”

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Another eye opening fact which asks for more than just mandating pre-marital tests is about women “who get infected not at the time of marriage but after the marriage”, reveals Tripti about the kind of cases that have increased in the recent past. She continues, “May be the tests have been conducted at the time of the marriage but what about complacency that sets in after conducting them once.”

It would, of course, be unfair to conclude that such instances have started to occur recently; only, private details are being discussed openly now. Mrs Salvi recalls, “When I got to know of my infection, I completely denied it. I went for the tests again and was frustrated for months. Doctors counselled me. I had to come to terms with it and couldn’t do much apart from getting mad at my husband who died soon thereafter. But slowly, I took control of my life and started working with an NGO. However, I was fortunate to find Mr Salvi who was in love with me from days before my first marriage. Despite knowing my positive status he married me. We take all precautions but still I am scared for him.” Mr Salvi agrees to have taken a risk but feels that the bond of their love transcends their bodies and is prepared for whatever happens.

But not all find such love and support. “Many positive people, to avoid rejection after any such mandate, would obtain a fake certificate which is not at all difficult in a country like India”, asserts Tripti who would rather want awareness to be created about the tests and counselling support from the government so that people get themselves tested voluntarily. Mulling over the intention of such acts she continues, “And why wouldn’t they? Would law guarantee post-test confidentiality? Unless the government can guarantee that, the law may do more harm than good.”

Agrees Elango Ramchander, General Secretary of the INP+ (Indian Network of People living with HIV/AIDS) who has been living with HIV for the past 21 years, “I am married to a positive person and have kids too. Compulsory revealing of facts would only force people to hide it. They should be helped to live with the infection. Virus is there in your bloodstream and right medication and precautions can help one live long. Marriage is an area which should be largely left to private realm and state shouldn’t be brought in between.”

Vice President of Bigfoot Inc., JavaBob Schmalzbach, writes about one of their many adventures...

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

We did hear loud "wood on wood" sounds one evening. There were two loud bangs, then nothing. In a heavily wooded area like this, these types of sounds can be attributed to large branches falling through the forest canopy and hitting other branches. It has been our experience that "tree knocking" is a form of communication for these creatures and is seldom done without a reply. With just two quick bangs, we cannot say that this is actually "tree knocking".

As much as we wanted to be able to verify any of the information shared with us by Tom Burnette, we were not able to do so at this time. Mr Burnette's stories and encounters seem to be authentic and had an air of truth about them, but unfortunately, we were not able to verify them during this visit.

Our plan was to stay for at least a week, but we got a call from another area and with no verifiable signs of any creatures after four full days of investigation, we made the decision to move on.

We will attempt to go back again after we get the results back from the DNA house. We need to make certain that we leave no stone unturned. I recommend that you get the book and read it yourself. The stories that Tom Burnette chronicles in his writings have a ring of truth to them and I am quite sure that he truly believes all that he has shared with us. Unfortunately, we were unable to verify anything at this particular time. Read the book and make up your own mind... in the mean time, we will keep on Searching for Bigfoot and share with you what we find... as we find it... and when we find it...!

The hunt is on

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

“My Ba (father) had caught a tiger that day. Unfortunately, before we noticed, the tiger was off the hooks and in no time, ate up his entire upper body,” recalls a 14-year-old girl of the Pardhi community.

Though nomadic, the Pardhis (also known as the baheliye) are spread across Madhya Pradesh and have been hunting for generations. “Some 20 people attack the trapped wild animal with their lathis, so it has not a great chance at defence,” continues the young Pardhi girl who now lives in a education center started by the WWF. Traditionally, the Pardhi men are skilled hunters and the women are experts at neatly taking off the hide, and selling at a good price! They walk 20-25 kms a day combing the forest for animal trails; they even mimic bird calls to ascertain their location! "No wonder these little moglis are not used to taking bath for months. It took us long to train them to use water instead of stones to wash after defecation,” reveals Indrabhaan, a WWF counsellor who works with the Pardhis.

Handling the perils of the jungle comes easier to these baheliye, for Inasin Bai expresses a wish to keep her “croc and tiger killing skills” alive. Hopefully, the right balance will be struck.

Between a rock and a hard place

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

At the Valmiki Sanctuary in Champaran, human interference has meant that it's not just the river that has changed course...

Gone are the days of the ‘big game’. Hunting and chasing wild animals is more like a dream. Way back in 1911, King George V had hunted 39 tigers and 18 rhinos in a mere 11 days of his stay at the Valmiki Sanctuary. Although hunting was banned long ago, in the present day scenario there are several other reasons for the drop in the tiger population. Engulfed with this problem, among many other wildlife parks is the Valmiki Sanctuary, which has undergone a great deal of unwanted change.

Located in the West Champaran district of Bihar, bordering Nepal, the Valmiki Sanctuary was declared and established as India's 18th Tiger Reserve in 1990 and is ranked 4th in the density of tiger population. Although the tiger count in this area has always been low, the authorities have forever claimed that the tigers have migrated to Nepal. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Mr. M K Sharma admits, “The drop in the tiger population may be due to our unscientific ways of counting, but certainly there has been a noticeable slump.”

The reserve had a 500 odd square kilometers as a buffer zone around it. But the Bihar Forest Division went ahead and included 40 square kilometers of densely populated area adjacent to Shikarpur. Most of the locals (about 1,50,000 people of the Tharu tribe) earned their livelihood by supplying boulders - carried by the ferocious currents of the mountaneous rivers - to the crushers. But soon after the declaration in 1990 that the riverbanks were out of bounds for one and all, as the preservation of the tiger’s habitat was necessary, the locals had to resort to other measures. Since the inhabitants, were forbidden from removing the rocks, the boulders had started to accumulate which had led to a change in the course of the river causing soil erosion. Strangely, back in 1993 ex-chief conservator O P Lal had inisited that removing these boulders was in no way detrimental to the environment. It was soon revealed that these boulders were still being sold but their contractor happened to be a close relative of the forest authorities. The Park even had a beautiful 13th century historical monument which is now been partially submerged. The Chief Conservator of Forests, Mr. B N Jha squarely blamed the boulder contractors, “They (boulder contractors)are responsible for changing course of the river and not the authorities.”

The authorities have always claimed to have done their bit for the sanctuary and for the cause of wildlife conservation. But the stark reality remains that poaching is still prevalent in the area. And while the Nepalese authorities have taken steps to keep a close check on the tigers by planting transmitters around their neck, the response on this side of the border has been lukewarm at best and lethargic at worst. Meanwhile, the tiger remains caught between the rock and a hard place.

Striped Dreams

IIPM Ranked No1 B-School in India

A foreword 'By Billy Arjan Singh'

In a democracy like India’s, wildlife will cease to exist without the support of the people. It is imperative that people living around wildlife areas benefit from it and are proud of it. However, at the same time, in order to preserve what remains, we have to ensure that certain tracts of our wilderness remain inviolate. Humans and wild animals just can’t coexist. And it is vital that India institutes an independent wildlife service like in the United States of America so that there is no conflict of purpose. The animals of the forest are creatures of instinct who take what they need and nothing more. They are not greedy and acquisitive like us human beings who resort to lies, thievery and worse because our needs are insatiable. It is for this reason that I’ve grown to love the natural world and it is precious for its own sake, not just for the air in our lungs and the water in our rivers. But if we fail to protect it, for its own sake or ours, when it goes, so would we…

There are many messes to clean up, much damage to undo.

ZEE BUSINESS BEST B SCHOOL SURVEY

My many Pakistani friends are entitled to mind the suggestion that a foreign power would infringe on their hard-won sovereignty, especially given the history of US involvement in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Equally, though, an American presidential candidate is entitled to give fair warning that we need Pakistan's cooperation in the tribal areas. The elephant in the living room is the Pakistani state's inability to exert full control over its own territory.

Here in the US, the mood since November 4 has been euphoric. We're still pinching ourselves. The previous regime had so habituated us to fear and loathing that we forgot to believe in hope and possibility. To at least 52.6 per cent of Americans, the moment feels almost like the fall of the Berlin Wall or the end of apartheid. There are many messes to clean up, much damage to undo. On Election Night, Obama urged us to put our hands "on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day". And Washington Post columnist Jim Hoagland nicely captured the tone already being set by the president-elect: "Prepare for bluster about enemies to become nuance about not-yet-friends; for ideology to cede to empirical practice; for co-opting to overtake confronting as a first resort."

Innocent Pakistanis are being killed by American bombs in Waziristan, and towns like Dera Ishmal Khan are suffering from the arrival of more refugees than they can absorb. The next US president will assume responsibility for this and many other tragedies. After he takes office, Obama will be culpable for any harm done by the United States on his watch. We don't yet know exactly how he will handle the fragile situation in and around Afghanistan. But given the character of the man, and the public mood - both global and domestic - a major US military incursion into Pakistan seems refreshingly implausible.

(Ethan Casey is the author of “Alive and Well in Pakistan: A Human Journey in a Dangerous Time” (Penguin India, 2005). He is currently working on a documentary film about contemporary Pakistan: “www.aliveandwellinpakistan.com”)

Indo-US ties: the NPT spectre that’s obama

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

While Obama has mesmerised the world, his equation with India is still to be seen

C Uday Bhaskar Defence and strategic analyst

Barack Obama’s victory in the US presidential elections on November 4 has had a mesmerising effect both within the US and the rest of the world but there is some degree of disquiet in India. Some campaign statements made by the US President-elect about Indo-Pak relations and Kashmir have been examined in detail for their likely negative implications on India-US bilateral relationship, which under President George Bush was ‘rocking’. Obama represents change, but to what degree will it be manifested in areas that are of high priority to India?

Going by the kind of statements Obama made in his campaign, some inferences could be arrived at in relation to India and the South Asian region. Apropos of the bilateral relationship, it is clear that India-US relationship has transformed due to the personal interest taken by the outgoing US President George Bush. The successful conclusion of the July 2005 civilian nuclear agreement has ensured that the Indo-US relationship is no longer ‘estranged’ over the contentious nuclear issue, and has now moved to preliminary ‘engagement.’ Thus, it is unlikely that the new presidency will radically alter this basic orientation.

During the campaign, Obama also made positive references to why India is important for the US in the future. Obama will bring in new initiatives and here, four areas are relevant to India. The first is the economic and trade policies. Given the negative impact of the current global financial crisis and the huge deficit that the US is facing, Obama will have to give this area the highest priority along with some degree of protectionist policies. This will also affect the Indian IT-dependent service sector but, hopefully, the November 14-15 G 20 meeting in Washington DC, which will be attended by PM Manmohan Singh, may help to mitigate this possibility.

Managing the global nuclear dynamic is another task. In a post victory interview, Obama indicated that Iran trying to obtain nuclear weapons would be “unacceptable”. Thus, the US would maintain the existing policy. However, he had said that he would not be averse to talks with Tehran and this shows that Obama will be more flexible and pragmatic towards Iran.

Targets for Parliamentarians

Prasoon S. Majumdar Editor, Economic Affairs The Sunday Indian

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

The state of a nation can be gauged by the way its parliament functions. It is needless to say that our parliaments have not only observed rampant abuse of democracy but also at an increasing pace. Not just in terms of their outrageous behaviour, our honourable Parliamentarians are finding it increasingly challenging to attend the sessions. This year, the number of Lok Sabha (LS) sittings has declined by 34 per cent and that of the Rajya Sabha (RS) by 20 per cent. For that matter even our state assemblies are following the footprints of centre. It has been reported that the number of sittings (till this point in time) in the Lok Sabha has been the lowest in the history of Indian Parliament. It is estimated that it could manage to touch a mark of 50 by December end, provided everything goes as per planned schedule. With that kind of participation, it can be well justified that the status of proposed legislations that were to be discussed in the Parliament is not exciting either. Before the start of session, there were 71 Bills pending, which by the end increased to 72. In spite of reducing the pending burden, the house actually increased the same!! It is now proposed that the Parliament should meet for 100 sittings every year, just to ensure that it is able to discuss the important Bills and pass important ordinances. Contrast this with the length of sessions that takes place in developed countries, which are not less than 140-150 days per year. It is most unfortunate that instead so spending meaningful hours in debating pertinent issues, our MPs on an average devote 20 minutes on an average to each Bill (25 per cent of LS sittings get adjourned due to disturbances).

Thus, it is just not that citizens bear a huge social cost but on top of that, the loss to the economy as a whole, due to cancellations or disturbances in Parliament, is unprecedented. A back of the envelope calculation shows that it cost the exchequer about Rs 26,000 for every minute of Parliament session, in addition to Rs 450 crore which the country spends on parliament every year. In fact, what else could one expect from a House where MPs are having criminal backgrounds, where most of them are incapable of comprehending any pertinent and meaningful discussion of a national significance. But then, this aspect of our democracy is nothing new. It has been debated endlessly; but as a nation we have somehow failed to evolve a workable solution to this. In fact we need to realise that there cannot be a democratic solution to this un-democratic functioning of our Parliament.

What I fail to understand is that when every institution, organisation and enterprise can function with specific goals and objectives, why can’t our Parliament do the same? Why can’t our Parliament within the given session work sort out the pending Bills? Why can’t our Parliament make the entire process of sorting the Bills, this way or that way, in a given session.

In such a scenario, if some Parliamentarians want to create nuisance, let them be at the mercy of everyone working overtime to either pass or shelve the bills / ordinances. With this happening, one might suddenly realise that no parliamentarian wishes to waste a single minute, for every minute they waste, they need to work overtime to see a Bill through. This would not just ensure quality time in Parliament, but also save the nation and its citizen from the huge costs and most importantly instill some sense of purpose to our own spoilt Parliamentarians!!

citigroup: divestment

The global downturn seems to be finally taking a toll on the Financial services major Citigroup. The company, itself formed with a huge merger, is now selling off its units. It is likely to sell its subsidiary, the bank’s captive technology and infrastructure outsourcing arm, Citi Technology Services (CTS). The players in the foray for clinching the deal are IBM, Wipro, TCS, and Infosys. Wipro is expected to be the likely winner. Citigroup earlier sold off its BPO – Citigroup Global Services (CGSL) to TCS for around $505 million in October 2008.

Can more than one Superpower work together for a better world?

Since the last week of August, Russia has been consistently visible across the news spectrum, especially amongst the western media, facing brickbats from various critics and analysts. Russia’s decision to recognise the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia has not only annoyed many developed countries but has also raised the age old latent question: Is cold war over?/ Does this mark the revival of Russia?/ Is Russia indirectly challenging the super power(s)?

The in-depth analysis of the latest 'Russian Doctrine' makes it evident that she is preparing both mentally and militarily to face her obvious enemy. Russia knows very well that she needs to work on her core strengths (world’s leading oil and gas supplier) that shall not last till eternity and may exhaust very soon. The nation is also facing a problem due to a decrease in population, a majority of which are migrants and not Russians. Presently, only 70 per cent of Russians constitute the country's military. To make matters worse, it is estimated that this percentage will be reduced to 60 in the near future.

Recently, the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice warned Russia and said, "In contrast to Georgia's position, Russia's international standing is worse now than at any time since 1991… and the cost of this self-inflicted isolation has been steep." Moreover, Putin was also found stating that the scramble of USSR was the greatest disaster of the 20th century, but now Moscow is in a position to undo the damage.

This friction got heated up after Russia deployed its strategic bomber over the Caribbean and participated in joint naval exercises with Venezuela. The tasks took place immediately after the US aid delivery reached Georgia, post war. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez stated (September 11, 2008) that these moves point towards "a multi-polar world". He said, "The Yankee hegemony is finished." Since the activities are happening in US-influenced regions, the next wave of cold war might spread to the Middle East. This hypothesis is evident from Syrian President Bashar Assad's statement (with reference to US-Russian confrontation) that appeared in Middle East Times on October 13, 2008, “Flames from one part of the world spreads to other regions and the fire becomes twice as strong.” It requires no rocket science to comprehend that Middle East would never want to get crushed between Russia and the US.

Leaving all this geo-politics at bay, it’s beyond doubt that world powers (and emerging powers) have wasted a lot of time in keeping the war hot. These powers could have easily solved many global conflicts to an extent, if not entirely.
