Why India tries, and others cry

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Will others learn from India’s logic of not ignoring newer markets?

Almost all economies across the globe are facing the negative tide caused by the recent financial crisis that first struck US, and in a rather harsh fashion. And just as unbelievable as this one sounds, all of them could have easily avoided such an ill aftermath. India on the other end is only facing some mild side effects of the mayhem that found its epicentre in US. So where is it that they all went wrong, unlike India? The answer is simple – greed!!! Surprised? Well, what better than a $13.7 trillion economy to have strong trade ties with? And for every other country, that meant partnering with the mighty United States of America and get blind to every other economy!

India’s export catalogue is highly diversified – dominated by products like handicrafts, textiles and leather, which undoubtedly suffered due their falling demand falling in global markets; however, the overseas sales of engineering goods, metals and petroleum products rose during the same period. India’s clientele is also geographically diversified.

Despite the cheap simile, the fact is that over-lending hits more than...

If you loved our playing to the gallery in the previous story, we take a bow, and do an about-turn. Here comes the serious stuff! The world is consuming more energy than it can generate, emitting more carbon than the earth can absorb, cutting more trees than we are planting, pumping and draining more water from the rivers than the earth can replenish, and so on so forth. What has gone unnoticed is the fact that over the last few decades, the concept of ‘extremism’ has become a way of life not only in the context of terror attacks but also in the context of our consumption and spending. If you thought it was just about borrowing beyond one’s capacity that we wished to churlishly discuss, perish the no-brainer thought! People – and institutions – are, in a new context, even lending beyond their capacity, despite clear warning signs about the borrower’s limits! The World Bank, IMF and other similar institutions have played their clarinet in making the credit culture so important and integral to the world economy. To reconfirm our gallery-playing mentality, the US is an easy hit.

Stop blaming it on the merger; blame myopism!

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

An author who has written a book on the dark side of mergers tells you why Citigroup’s sick present is not a result of the massive merger... So why’s it sick?

Robert F. Bruner,
Dean and Charles C. Abbott Professor of Business Administration
Darden Graduate School of Business and author of the best-seller Deals From Hell

The perception of most critics is that Citigroup is too large to be managed, that all of its stumbles in recent years reflect a firm that is out of control. Therefore, if I may, I would direct your attention to perhaps the most significant deal – the merger of Travelers Insurance and Citicorp in 1998 that formed Citigroup and which accounted for its large size. Thus, the chief question is whether this original deal is the source of the firm’s troubles today. Does this argument make sense? I doubt it. I have written a book on major failures in M&A, called Deals from Hell. Many factors add up to consign a deal to hell, but one must be able to associate the adverse outcome with the deal as opposed to other things that intruded in the life of the firm.

1. Destruction of value: The stock price of Citigroup rose handsomely in the three years following the deal. Then the price was hammered in the recession of 2001-2002, after which it rose again. The sharpest value destruction occurred in the past 12 months – but is this associated with the merger? I don’t think so.

2. Loss of talent: I have less data here, but the loss of senior execs (John Reed, Jamie Dimon) usually occurs after mergers. I heard they left after disagreements with Sanford Weill, not because of disillusionment with the trajectory of the firm. The bigger issue is, what happened to the cadre of innovators and talented emerging managers 2-4 layers below?

3. Loss of strategic position; destruction of brand value; legal and ethical lapses. You can make the case for all of these... but again, it is a stretch to tie such developments to the merger in 1998. The big question is whether the merger rendered Citigroup too big to manage. There is a populist critique of M&A that labels big deals as necessarily bad. But size isn’t the issue: the investing public should focus on efficiency rather than size.

Other enterprises are equally complex but seem to do well, or at least, avoid the type of crash Citigroup experienced in recent months – I refer to General Electric, United Technologies, Berkshire Hathaway, ExxonMobil, BHP Billiton and others. I am persuaded that some very serious industry dynamics are influencing the price of Citigroup common, but it is hard to say that executives of Citi and Travelers should have foreseen these 10 years ago.

The Antidote to Complexity: ‘Brutally Simple Thinking’

Following M&C’s launch in 1995, Adweek referred to the company as ‘The fastest growing start-up in the history of advertising.’ Will the agency be able to achieve a similar feat in India too? Neha Saraiya finds out

“We are the original Saatchi!” gushes Kamal Oberoi, Chairman and Managing Director, M&C Saatchi India. This certainly needs a clarification for an agency, which has the ‘Saatchi’ tag attached to it. M&C Saatchi, which also is the baby of the legendary Saatchi brothers (Maurice and Charles Saatchi), started off in 1995 in London, Sydney, New York, Hong Kong and Singapore, when the brothers were ousted from their own company in a boardroom coup. Even after a much disgraced exit from the Saatchi & Saatchi network (now part of the Publicis group), the agency still finds it difficult to come out of its corporate warfare past. Oberoi agrees, “No doubt that there is confusion in the market, but one needs to only explain the difference. Clients think that we are related to them (Saatchi & Saatchi) but we clarify that we are a totally independent company as we don’t belong to any holding company.”

The diesel variant of the model came with an appealing price that could kill the competition at its own game.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Indeed, irrespective of the present fracas, M&M recorded strong y-o-y growth numbers earlier and is only now, like others in the industry, has been hit by the slowdown. Speaking to 4Ps B&M, in better times, Nayar had pointed, “M&M volumes have grown from 30,000-44,000, a CAGR growth of 20%. This is when the industry grew by only 7%. In pickups, we are the market leaders with 83% market share. Here, Mahindra grew at 77%, a full 33% more than the segment.” So where did things go wrong for M&M and that too suddenly?

According to analysts, M&M’s travails can be perhaps linked to the failed effort in the fast growing D segment, where the company’s Logan failed to impress. Success of the Logan could have hedged or at least supplemented sales of the company. The saloon, brought into India as a result of a partnership with Renault, was strategically positioned in a segment where petrol was the mainstay. The diesel variant of the model came with an appealing price that could kill the competition at its own game.

However, the dated looks of the saloon, which shared its structure from the same model sold by Dacia (Renault’s Romanian division), failed to appeal to the Indian consumers, who were already spoilt for choices. With sales of 10,284 units, Logan’s sales declined by almost 30%. Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata continued to enjoy an increase in sales in the period, proof that M&M perhaps went wrong in its D segment strategy. Even though Anand Mahindra, MD, M&M termed the Logan launch as a “milestone that marks M&M’s entry into the most competitive segment of the automotive market,” the model has been far from being perfect as a ‘segment entry’ effort. Clearly, a saloon does not fit perfectly into the M&M portfolio and as such the auto major certainly needs to introspect its core strategy.

Given Indian telecom’s evolution cycle, handset makers are gearing up to be more data supportive. By Surbhi Chawla

A wiseman once said, “only change is permanent.” And we couldn’t agree less, not even when we talk about the friendly device that you have in your palm most of the time – your mobile handset. Times are indeed changing, and with the consumer evolving, what we stand witness to today is a paradigm shift in consumer buying habits, which ensures that they are increasingly laying hands on handsets that necessarily possess data-capable features besides the sophistication associated with appearance! And this is how the G1 (lovingly called the Google Phone by techies) flagged off another dimension to the tale of handsets getting brainier by the day... “The G1 has the potential to bring about a paradigm shift in the handset industry and perhaps five years from now, we would be amused to think about the kind of handsets that we use today,” says Rajiv Makhani, a handset expert and anchor of the show Gadget Guru at NDTV while speaking to 4Ps B&M. The G1 was manufactured by the Taiwanese handset manufacturer – HTC in collaboration with the search engine giant Google. So what’s special and new about the G1? Well, it runs on the ‘Android’ technology, which is an open-source software and is therefore a step towards realising the device that defines future convergence.

Another key criteria to push broadband popularity is the cost factor. Broadband rates in India in comparison to the western world are about 50% steeper. Some like RCOM, who have played safe and have already laid down miles of fibre optic cables will be walking on familiar territory here. However, they along with others are facing problems as the end point copper cables are with the state owned BSNL which is in no mood to unbundle them and make it easier for these operators. The good news is that this might change with the coming of WiMAX, another feasible alternative to connect the dots...

When Margins Matter: Sukanta Dey, President, Emerging Business, Tata Teleservices believes, “There is big opportunity even for new players in the enterprise business segment.” And it’s not merely the huge unexploited potential that is endearing telcos to enterprise business, rather the neat margins involved are a bigger attraction. Factor this: Reuters has outsourced their entire data and communication needs to British Telecom (BT) for an estimated $7 million. Of this BT will arguably pocket a neat $1 million as gross profit. According to a BT source, the telco decided to concentrate just on its enterprise business when it saw the wireless market in UK hit saturation point. The strategy is paying off and others are following suit.

Social imbalances, clubbed with extreme poverty and pathetic lifestyles are weakening India’s foundation

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

And India burns like this...

It is interesting, but disappointing at the same time, especially considering that despite having 20% of world’s total children, 40% of its young population is malnourished. This puts India at 3rd on malnourished kids chart but from the bottom!!!

In 2006-07, India’s mortality rate under five (per 1,000) was 76, a figure high and dangerous. And why not if a country spends merely 3-4% of its GDP on education and just 1-2% on healthcare (which is far less than pubic spending by even countries like Namibia, Bolivia, Sri Lanka et al). While talking to B&E, International Food Policy Research Institute said that, “India has very high levels of malnutrition among preschoolers (47%)... and it ranks at the bottom of the world on child malnutrition, right before Bangladesh and Nepal, and after countries such as Sudan, Cambodia, and Ethiopia!”

To sum up the social performance, one can just glimpse through India’s position in World Prosperity Index 2008 where we rank 70th amongst 104 nations. In India, a female on an average earns $1,500/year while a male earns $4,000/year. The GGG report further divulges that the female-to-male ratio for literacy rate is just 0.65! If statistics are to be trusted, an increase in India’s female labour force participation by 86% could easily push our GDP growth up by 1.08% per year! But the most hard-hitting truth is poverty. As per the World Bank, 41.6% of Indians are currently living below poverty line (BPL). The truth is that even today many Indians are deprived of an acceptable life standard. It is the society that makes the economy and not vice-versa, have we forgotten this?

They should conduct spirited, no-holds-barred town meetings – the more the better.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Business leaders have an additional tool for building trust in good times: connecting with their people. We’re not talking about walking thru hallways saying “hi.” We’re talking about building relationships on a visceral level. Leaders can build trust by hanging out where the work gets done, talking and listening, looking in people’s eyes. They should conduct spirited, no-holds-barred town meetings – the more the better. They should talk about who they are and what they feel, their motives and dreams. The more authentic a leader shows himself to be, the more authentic his people will be in return. And authenticity builds trust.

Let’s hope that trust will return to Washington on Nov. 4 with the election of a new president and Congress. For business leaders, the current crisis should have the sound of bells tolling. Build trust today: Tomorrow will be too late.

General in the cop’s seat,He was called in to crush violence whenever and wherever it surged in the country.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Odierno needs to smartly balance policing with pacification

So the war that began on the pretext of denuclearising the Iraqi arsenal and dethroning a warmonger has now toned down to policing Al Qaeda. The recent change of guard in the coalition forces saw one learned General handing over the command to the other. With Saddam out of the picture and forces loyal to him either obliterated or incorporated into the Iraqi Army, General Raymond T. Odierno has responsibilities that befit a police chief. Analysts emphasise that as the Commanding General of Multi-National Force – Iraq (MNF-I), Odierno’s primary responsibility is to tackle Al Qaeda gangs.

“It’s Al Qaeda in Anbar province that Odierno will be dealing with,” affirmed Theodore Karasik, the director (research and development) at the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis (INEGMA), Dubai. Odierno lacks the brilliant academic credentials of General David Howell Petreaus but has a career replete with pragmatic accomplishments. As the commander of 4th Infantry Division, he quelled violence in the non-complying Sunni strongholds where Saddam drew his closest Baathist comrades from. His troops captured Saddam Hussein. He was called in to crush violence whenever and wherever it surged in the country.

Former ISI chief Assad Durrani had told this journalist earlier that Al Qaeda is an invisible force and is not tangible. If it’s a force, it’s a dreaded one. It has the shrewdness to elicit violent reprisals from the Shia community and maturity to understand that killing its own cadres only fulfills its objective. It has struck missiles in Iraq's neighbouring Hashemite Kingdom and has the potential to direct them to the richer Gulf Emirates. Odierno can meet objectives under political pressure and irritating media criticism, which is his greatest strength in tackling the new challenges. His coarse facade may be moderated by some lessons from his predecessor.
