There are also rumours that Nokia would be coming out with its touch phone – Nokia Tube pretty soon.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Although HTC has been able to make some ground in the Indian market but the greater challenge now will be to gain, and then maintain a momentum. In the last couple of months, many handset manufacturers, have unleashed touch phones to the Indian mobile lovers, including Apple, which recently unveiled the iPhone. There are also rumours that Nokia would be coming out with its touch phone – Nokia Tube pretty soon.

However, Sharma counters, “I don’t think of iPhone as competition but as an opportunity. The hype that it would generate would help in creating more awareness about touch phones. As iPhone is present only in one price category, people looking for more alternatives would be willing to pick up our phones.” Indeed, HTC offers phones that range from Rs.10,000 to Rs.30,000 and given the fact there are about 3-4 million new subscribers being added every month and an equally alive replacement market (which accounts for 35% of total handsets sales), there is high potential to be tapped.

As Tata Tea’s market slips and as the present younsters vote for coffee over tea, what’ll be the battle cry from Tata’s end? Will ‘Jagho re’ work for

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

CHAI ANOTHER DAY!

Look around you: how many coffee chains can you spot at a typical urban shopping complex, or how many coffee outlets can you spot as you drive past? Many, right. Now, for the truth: how many tea chains can you even recall, forget about spotting them at the right locations?! Today, coffee has made some special place in the hearts of the young in a nation known to be a ‘tea-drinking’ nation. So what is Tata Tea really doing to prove that chai will not become history for Tata Tea? Wait for some weeks and you’ll stand witness to the company’s ad-campaign which will be supported by massive promotional activities. So if cajoling consumers (by reminding them of their social responsibility) through the jaago re campaign was not enough, the upcoming marketing effort promises to deliver better goods... for reviving Tata Tea’s once known core beverage. “We are not claiming we will come out with funky campaigns but we would be coming out with campaigns to promote tea. This is because today’s generation connects tea with old people,” feels a seemingly confident Sangeeta.

Where ‘Place’ (of 4Ps) is concerned, Tata Tea is adopting the direct retailing route. In the initial stage, it plans to experiment with two-three outlets limited to just Bangalore. Christened as chai-un-chai, the company also plans to roll-out two new formats - the high street format (similar to cafes) and a tie-up with bookstores. But doesn’t Nestlé and Café Coffee Day already have such similar outlets, pan-India? Question Sangeeta on this and she shoots back: “Nobody is promoting tea as almost all of them focus only on coffee. And then, we are also open to the option of taking our retail outlets across India which will make our movement better and wider...”

Indeed, for now it appears that Tata Tea’s third eye is focussed on tea alone. But there’s another challenge: creating tea-outlets would require a sturdy supply base and here Tata Tea can take a lesson from Café Coffee Day, which cultivates its coffee beans in its captive gardens! Surely, till date, Tata Tea has been known to follow the ‘good riddance to tea gardens’ theory. It can... no more! Percy is now betting big on his plans to re-structure Tata Tea’s existing tea estates in northern India. The ongoing jaago re campaign was devised with an aim to establish a social awakening among the youth, to motivate them to vote. But in its election against all other players in the tea market, Tata needs to come up with such campaigns to beat the wind out of competition – organised or not organised. Thankfully, for now, chai still means tea for Tata Tea!

Will the BIG strategy for BIG Cinemas, work now that it has officially entered the BIG league? 4Ps B&M's Surbhi Chawla explores

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

What's more? Right from the onset BIG Cinemas has been gung-ho about tier II and III cities. At a time when most multiplexes (read PVR Cinemas, Waves et al) were looking at establishing a brand name by delivering great cinema experience (they were concentrating on just the metros and charging a premium over other cinema halls), BIG Cinemas saw this as a huge opportunity and set up multiplexes in many tier II cities like Kanpur, Hyderabad, Ghaziabad, et al.

Not just this, BIG Cinemas pioneered the concept of 6D cinema in India, and have launched India's first ever 6D cinema hall in Agra (in partnership with the worldwide Cinema Park Network). The idea behind setting up such a cine hall in Agra is that Agra is one of the major tourist destinations of the country. As this cinema hall is within walking distance from Taj Mahal it provides a convenient pass time for tourists who get some wholesome entertainment. Sources within the company revealed that BIG Cinemas is already in the process of setting up more such innovative cinema halls in other major tourist destinations like Goa, Jaipur and around other international airport terminals as well.

And that's not where the BIG story ends. BIG Cinemas is already in the process of introducing the first megaplex in India. These megaplexes would have more than ten screens and would offer facilities like exclusive entertainment offerings for kids, youth, families and senior citizens. These megaplexes would not just screen movies but also show alternative sporting content, live concerts, et al. The company plans to start its first megaplex in Mumbai sometime in 2009 and is already developing another one in Punjab. Plans of opening around 10-15 such megaplexes in places like Delhi, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, et al, are underway.

Having established their strong foothold in India, BIG Cinemas is now all set to make a mark for itself on the global map. Over the last one year, the company has acquired over 200 cinema halls in 28 North American cities, including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Detroit and Washington. All these would be re-branded as BIG Cinemas shortly. Apart from America, BIG Cinemas has also acquired Malaysia-based Lotus Five Star Cinemas, and is operating a 51 screen cinema chain in Malaysia as well.

Has Our Big Bang At Cannes Rocketed Us To The Global Arena? Or is too much being read about a hyped firang awards,

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

MONOJIT LAHIRI checks-out with the Adfrat

The Toast of the Fest! The Stars of the event! The Flavour of the day! India – with an unprecedented tally of 23 metals (including the first-ever Grand Prix, Integrated Lion & Cyber Lion) swept across all categories, and re-enforced by physical presence in all major juries – scored big, both at the hustings and the mind space of the global guru’s gracing the glamorous, glitzy and hi-profile ‘Oscars’ of the ad world! Accolades came thick and fast from hot-shots like Terry Savage (“They have done extraordinarily well this year”), Craig Davis (“brilliant ideas can come from anywhere. Bravo!”), Mark Gross (“Their work is beginning to stand out because they are getting to know more about the medium, its nuances and what should be done in that medium. They will now move only upwards …”), Rodney Fitch (“India has indeed scored very high!”) and Colleen DeCourcy (“India is already thinking on the new media as well and the creative talent is being groomed to think in that direction. That is a good sign. Clearly the expectations will be more, next time.”)

Looking back today, does all this indicate ad-India’s coming of age in the global platform? Or are these early days? Or is too much being read about a hyped firang awards, which has no connection with the ground realities defining India’s market space?

Siddhartha Roy (Executive Director, RESPONSE, Kolkata) fires the first salvo. He believes that in today’s globalised world, “Cannes is important and our work being awarded there demonstrates our worth in the international arena – reason enough to celebrate!” His main reason to rejoice however is “an exciting climate of creativity, powered by the new-age client’s genuine desire to buy into fresh, cutting-edge ideas is clearly visible. This augurs well for the future.” Equus Red Cell’s Swapan Seth is not so sure. He reckons that while modest jubilation is in order, too much shouldn’t be read into this scoring. Why? “Because, barring some outstanding (produced and released) work, Cannes continues to be claimed by … Scams!”

Ujjal Sinha (CEO, Genesis, Kolkata) however refuses to be so cynical. “Globally, India today is rocking! From DAVOS to IT, its Incredible India all the way! Cannes, sort of (appropriately) seemed to fall in line.” Sinha however cautions about getting carried away and emphasises that we have a long way to go before we consistently are able to deliver world-class communication slugs.

The food paradox, in fact the Union Health minister Dr. Ramadoss has been campaigning since 2006 to institute the same ban without much success.

What to feed the students? This is the question

Greasy burgers dripping with fat, deep fried chicken nuggets, fizzy colas brimming with caffeine and excessive sugar. Tempted or turned off? Well I suspect your choice will depend on your economic background. Because India is unfortunately one of a few countries where reports of malnutrition among kids (the have nots) can run parallel to reports of obesity among a different set of kids (the haves, or have too much). For example, at one end (the haves) there’s a feverish activity to ban all forms of junk food from schools, in fact the Union Health minister Dr. Ramadoss has been campaigning since 2006 to institute the same ban without much success. “Nothing much has changed since the ban came into effect in 2006. The canteen still serves potato chips and colas along with deep fried patties and burgers. Most adolescent children don’t bring their own lunch and are therefore forced to eat the junk food served in schools”, says Nikhil a student of Army Public School in Delhi. And meanwhile reports have come in that states obesity rate among children living in metros have exceeded beyond 25%.

However, at the other end, according to a report out this week, the government is mulling over a proposal submitted by the Ministry of Women and Child Development to institute a mid-day meal scheme for adolescent girls to check their dropout rates. Designed to provide 500 calories worth of nutritious and healthy food, and costing the ministry just Rs.5 per meal, these mid-day meals could just be the solution needed for both the “haves” and the “have nots”.

‘Shock and Awe’ is still alive....POST COLD WAR AND ADVENT OF LOW INTENSITY CONFLICT

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Low Intensity Conflict and the shift from mass destruction to precision-strikes are changing paradigms

The development of ICBMs necessitated the development of a deterrent to thwart the threat of incoming missiles and thus was the advent of the doctrine of minimum deterrent of which the development of an ABM or an Anti Ballistic Missile System was a critical part. During the development of the now rather famous Patriot ABM system, USA realised that it’s far more easier to develop a ballistic missile than to develop something which can destroy it before it hits the target.

The Patriot ABM was not so successful in the initial stages, especially during Gulf War I, when it could not even take down the otherwise obsolete Iraqi Scuds. Later on, the US started working on a more advanced version of Patriot system as part of a larger ABM programme known as Theatre Missile Defence System and the National Missile Defence System, with the former being aimed at protecting US from short range missiles while the latter includes in its paradigm protecting US from all kinds of missiles including the ICBMs. This system, which is known as Theatre High Altitude Defence System (THAAD), is yet to be operational. Today, probably every country among the top league is working on some or the other kind of ABM system. While the Russian S-300, S-400, S-500 and the Galosh, Gazelle series of ABM has been extremely successful, the Israeli Arrow ABM system, which works in tandem with the Green Pine Radars, have been successful too. Countries like India too have been working on endo-atmospheric and exo-atmospheric air defence systems. In fact, the very concept of ABM is an extension of the ambitious Star Wars programme initiated by the Reagan Administration in 1980s to protect USA from Soviet ballistic missiles. But the development of the ABM system did not mitigate the threat perceptions as it gave rise to the concept of Multiple Independent Re-entry Vehicles (MIRV), wherein an incoming ICBM would carry multiple warheads and before re-entering the atmosphere would disintegrate with each warhead going in a separate direction. The objective in this case was that even if some of the warheads would be destroyed by the incumbent’s ABM system, some others would still reach their designated destination. Thus, the doctrine of MAD continued with its prominence.

As the government relents, steel players must get their house in order

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Colour me pink...

However, in the last quarter, steel prices again fell by almost 20%, as the Government imposed a 5% import duty on steel products. According to Pawan Burde, steel analyst, Angel Broking, “Government is trying to control the falling steel prices by giving various sops to the steel sector.” The Government of India has now allowed all the withdrawn benefits and announced a 4% cut in central excise duty on steel production. Also, exporters will again be entitled to enjoy the tax benefits under the DEPB scheme. Also, the steel industry took certain measures on its own to maintain balance in the inventory. Says an analyst, “Various steel companies reduced their production by 15-20% in the last quarter. This helped in reducing production costs and prevented inventory imbalances.” Reduction in production has helped bridge the demand-supply gap. Where on one hand, the domestic steel market has stabilised; exports have also picked up in the last quarter. Iron ore exports reached 13.5 million tonnes in December 2008 as opposed to 9.8 million tonnes exported last year (an increase of 37.75%).

As the tables have turned in the favour of steel players, the Indian steel sector, in order to further augment their growth, has taken certain measures. For starters, the Indian steel players have announced that they will refrain from further price-cuts as demand in the domestic market has marginally revived. Furthermore, steel companies have also demanded that more liquidity should be injected in the system to enhance demand from key sectors such as automotive and construction. Adds Burde, “Steel players have also demanded that import duty may be increased from current 5% to 15%.”

From Rs.50,000 per tonne in March 2008, steel prices have fallen to Rs.30,000 per tonne at the start of this year. But as things start taking a favourable shape, it is expected that 2009 will bring some respite. While the Government should make sure that the economic slowdown in the country should not impact the automotive and construction sector; steel players on the other hand should balance their inventories, refrain from further price cuts and seek to augment their exports.

Such comments coming from within the establishment in China show how ominous the signs are for the Middle Kingdom.

IIPM Ranked No. 1 B-School In Global Exposre - Zee...

Even die hard supporters of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) agree that trouble is looming over the horizon. Says, Zhou Tianyang, one of the most well known scholars of CCP, “Unquestionably, at present, we are inward bound to a peak stage of mass incidents. This year, Chinese people may face even more divergences and spars that will test all the more the governing skills of all levels of the CCP and administration.” Incidentally, ‘Mass Incidents’ is Chinese State speak for riots, protests and unrest! Adds Mao Shoulong, Public Administration expert at Renmin University in Beijing, “The social unrest is gathering. It may well prove as the most severe test since 1989.” Such comments coming from within the establishment in China show how ominous the signs are for the Middle Kingdom.

And the signs have been ominous indeed. In the last quarter of 2008, GDP growth rate crashed to 6.8%, down from 13% in 2007. In annualized quarter on quarter terms, the actual GDP growth rate works out to an unimaginable 2%. In fact, there are many credible think tanks and analysts who reckon that actual GDP growth rate in December 2008 and January 2009 may be closer to zero. Exports have actually slumped in December 2008, as per official estimates and have taken a severe beating even in January 2009. Compared to a typically blistering 17% growth in 2007, industrial production grew by a pitiful 5.7% in 2008. According to the OECD, economic activity in China has slumped to levels below that what prevailed in 1989 before the Tiananmen Square massacre that killed thousands. In a recent review of the Chinese economy, The Economist is prepared to stick its neck out and say that a 4% rate of GDP growth is a possibility. The principal cause behind this spectacular downfall is the crash in merchandise exports that is gathering momentum every week. For years and decades, merchandise exports grew in excess of 20% every year. In 2009, they are slated to decline by 10% at least. What is even more shocking is that while exports fell marginally in December 2008, imports crashed by almost 30%. For an economy that is so driven by foreign trade, this can only be disaster.

Countries must improve bilateral trade relations to ensure overall world development

Global Trade - Don’t blame us for the crisis

Apart from the above mentioned two important things, there is one more area that needs significant focus in order to ensure overall world development. Countries must also look forward to improving the bilateral trade relations. It is true that the success of the multilateral negotiations of the Doha Round is more important than ever before, and it upsets me greatly to see that a great part of the political class in Europe and the US remains anchored to protectionist positions, something which is not what development and the fight against poverty demands. This is primarily due to lack of political leadership and shortage of vision, which leads to imposing sectarian and particular interests in the way of general interests. Today, especially Europe and the US are harming themselves with such short-sighted policies. Short-sighted arguments are on the short-term revenue losses, which they want to recover by raising tariffs, and the fear from economies like China and India, which they deem as potential threats for their industries in future.

The situation has become grave now! Though, we direly need some positive result out of these multilateral negotiations, we cannot merely sit back and wait for other countries to change their stand and come to a consensus. In the mean time, I believe, forging bilateral agreements, Free Trade Agreements (FTA) and even a Regional Trade Agreements (RTA), are better options. By giving priority to this, even India can advance in the liberalisation of bilateral trade with many other countries and then consolidate the agreements at the WTO level once the Doha Round succeeds.

As told to Shashank Tripathi
