Haarde's popularity fell steeply in public ratings after Iceland’s deeply indebted economy fell apart in the midst of the global debt crisis. As the crown (Iceland's currency) fell, the government was left with just one option: to seize control of its three major banks. This crisis has been a tremendous let-down for 320,000 Icelanders, whose rising incomes and prosperity had left them quite unprepared for this. "What this essentially means is that this is a country without a government, so it's impossible to say what might happen next,” says Gunnar Kristinsson, Professor at Iceland University. It is anticipated that the economy will shrink by 9.6% in 2009, while unemployment will touch 7.8%.

Bailouts by neighbouring countries and IMF are failing to prop up the economy. The new PM Johanna Sigurdardottir is asking Central Bank governors to resign and is building consensus for a union with EU. As other options fail, this indeed seems to be the best way forward.

Ten reasons why India would grow almost as strongly as it has done in the past many years

Let’s demolish some myths and finally bury some shibboleths while talking about the Indian economy. And let’s do that with unadulterated facts; not prejudice and perceptions. The most pernicious one is the one related to that fancy term called ‘de-coupling’. Last fall, when the meltdown started in Wall Street, many in India insisted that we will not be affected because we are not really all that integrated with the global economy. And now, we have the same set of people saying that we are quite integrated after all; and we will feel the pain. That is utter nonsense as historical data bear out. Even during the old glory days of crony socialism, when the Indian economy was inward looking, global economic shocks always adversely affected India.

In 1967, when Europe and America were hit by a crisis of confidence, the Indian economy literally tanked. In 1973, after the oil shock roiled the global economy, GDP growth rate collapsed in India. In 1979, after the second oil shock, GDP growth rate collapsed all over again and India went to IMF for a bailout. When the global economy was entering a mini recession in 1990, the Indian economy again collapsed and the powers that be again went hat in hand to IMF.

Besides, the leader of Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) Ichiro Ozawa is very determined to take up power this time and he may well be successful. “The administration neglects its responsibility and its mission,” he said recently. DPJ is projecting that the crisis should be seen as an opportunity for change.

Moreover, LDP is facing trouble within too. Disunity has grown at large and Watanabe's resignation may just be the beginning. Says Kazuhisa Kawakami, a political expert at Meiji Gakuin University, Tokyo, “Watanabe will provide leadership for all those who leave the LDP.” And the party may find it hard to resist a painful split, unless Aso also gives away his position at the helm of the party to another stronger and more credible leader.

During the campaign, rumours circulated that Obama might depart from the US rejectionism that has long been a primary barrier to a genuine two-state settlement, an independent Palestinian state coexisting with Israel. This is the long-standing international consensus that the US and Israel have blocked, in virtual isolation with rare and temporary departures. Otherwise the consensus is supported by the entire world, including the majority of the US population. Obama’s record, however, promises no basis for taking the rumours seriously.

As a special assistant on the Middle East, Obama has picked Daniel C. Kurtzer, Clinton-Bush ambassador to Egypt and Israel. Kurtzer took part in writing Obama’s speech to the Israeli lobbying organisation AIPAC in Washington last June. The remarkable text went well beyond President Bush in its obsequiousness, even declaring that “Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must be undivided” – a position so extreme that his campaign had to explain that his words didn’t mean what he said. And Kurtzer is one of the more moderate of Obama’s choices on the region. Israeli President Shimon Peres informed the press that on his July visit to Israel, Obama had said he was “very impressed” with the Arab League Proposal, which calls for full normalisation of relations with Israel. That goes even beyond the consensus on a two-state settlement.

Mere rhetoric can fall flat unless Obama moves in fast to repair the Middle East

Humanity has heaved a collective moan of relief since their contender has won the US Presidential election. Poll after poll in numerous countries confirmed that if they could have voted, Barack Obama would have polled even more of a rout than he received in the just concluded election. And why was Obama the world’s candidate? Quite plainly, people feel they can talk to him. Individuals around the globe associated with Obama as they perceive him as a gentleman of dialogue, not a hoodlum of dictates. And after years of the haughtiness, bigotry, and unilateralism of the Bush regime, this came as a gust of fresh air. And voters in the United States should be proud of themselves for overcoming the terror and racism that had so subjugated their civilisation since time immemorial. It was time and again stated that America was a racist nation and would by no means elect a Black president. Well, now they have done it, so a new day has surely dawned.

However, one needs to be cautious while expecting a drastic change in US (read ‘Obama’s’) policies post-elections. The Middle East has endured great pains over the last decade due to the Bush regime’s lopsided and unreasonable policies. Palestine, Iraq, Lebanon, and Afghanistan faced contemptuous assaults by the US and Israeli armies.

As if the problems with global fuel prices weren’t enough, Kingfisher has gone ahead and undertaken strategies that only seem a do ‘and’ die effort.

It’s not that such a situation suddenly crept up on Mallya. Various reports estimate that Kingfisher posted Rs.240 crore of losses in FY05-06, Rs.577 crore losses in FY06-07; and Air Deccan – India’s largest publicly listed loss making company – was never a profitable company in the near past! And one cannot forget that Mallya had spent a huge Rs.975 crore approximately of his invaluable cash to purchase 46% stake in Air Deccan in FY 07-08! All airlines in India, for that matter, are in losses and are bleeding bad. Where Jet has been facing a daily loss of almost over Rs.9 crore, Air India is expected to post well over Rs.4,000 crore losses in the current fiscal year as compared to net losses of Rs.2,144 crore in FY08.

All this has badly affected in-flight services and airlines are now even planning to charge for the water they serve on board. Would such process moves help Kingfisher? We found the question pretty hilarious. The per passenger loss for the combined entity of Kingfisher and Deccan is a confounding Rs.2,400! What help can charging for one bottle of water or even a meal help? So why can’t Kingfisher simply increase ticket prices?

But Indians, as we said before, never learn! But hey, isn’t India too supposed to grow on the back of mega-merger deals? Isn’t L. N. Mittal, who succeeded in merging his company with Arcelor (the world’s largest steel corporation), the new purveyor of the rise of Indians? Aren’t flamboyant Indian companies like Tata Steel, Suzlon, Aditya Birla Nuvo, GMR Infra, TCS, Ranbaxy, Apollo, Videocon, ONGC and many more – which have accounted for multi billion dollar M&A deals in the last three years while taking over foreign and domestic corporations – sparkling benchmarks of corporate excellence?

And what about the paeans being sung in the praise of indisputable leaders like Tata Coffee (which bought off 30% of Energy Brands Corporation in the US for an unbelievable $677 million), Dr. Reddy’s Labs (which snapped up Germany’s Betapharm for a gigantic $576 million), Ranbaxy (which gobbled up Terapia of Romania for a smothering $324 million) and innumerable more? Are we simply supposed to believe that most of these Indian M&A deals are, er, stupid? Considering shareholder value, revenue growth, cost synergies, and almost everything a company could have stood for, the answer is yes!

Austan Goolsbee, professor at the University of Chicago GSB, is expected to lead his team of economic advisors.

The second structural defect afflicting hybrids is their pricing. It could well turn out that unless auto companies ensure that the pricing levels of offered hybrids are in tune with mass market expectations – especially in markets like India and China, expected to be the world’s top two in the next five to ten years – they might well start failing. Hybrids are simply not cost effective, and will not be in the next seven to ten years, if at all then. A hybrid, to be rampantly successful, has to be priced in such a range that enables the consumer to perceive its ‘long term’ cost effectiveness over the ‘short term’, thus engaging his buying intent. Confusing? For better clarity, read what Deputy Editor Virat Bahri writes later on in the cover section: “Doubts are often raised about how cost effective hybrids really turn out to be. NuWire Investor’s Cali Zimmerman compared the [price of the] Toyota Camry hybrid with the normal version, and statistically proved that the cost difference cannot be recovered before 13.8 years!!! Even the first hybrid to be introduced in, say, a poor country like India – the Honda Civic – costs a huge Rs.18-22 lakhs.” How does one expect consumers in a poverty-ridden country like India (with per capita GDP just around $1000) to buy such a costly car? Isn’t it then quite a no-brainer issue to say that a hybrid, by its very definition, loses its USP once it is priced higher than even normal cars? Amusingly, not when you look at it from the perspective of billion dollar corporations who refuse to wink when drunk.

And this has been so because after properly studying and analysing all possible portfolio investment models, the only conclusion I could come to as a very keen student of management (who has always believed that there is nothing more practical than a good theory) was that “all the theories that suggested that the most ultimate way to make money in stock markets, were utter garbage.” There is no way that one can draw a regression line and show that because over the last 20 years, people have made money in the stock markets like this, therefore they can do the same in the future too. The last time the Nobel Prize was given to two economists for their portfolio investment model, one saw the US government having had to bail out the venture of these very economists just one year down the road! That, indeed, is the one and only truth about share market investments. So why should the share markets exist at all? And if so, who should invest in it and who will make money from there?

Dabur has decisively broken away from two legacies that had constrained it in the past –

Sunil Duggal, CEO, Dabur India, in fact, points out a startling contrast in an exclusive interview to B&E, "Three to four years ago, when the economy was on a strong growth path with 9% growth, FMCG sector was seeing no growth, in fact there was some contraction happening in the sector." That does not seem to be the case at the moment, if Dabur's results for the quarter ending September are anything to go by. The company posted sales of Rs.5.88 billion, a growth of 13% yoy. Net profits were Rs.1.06 billion, which is a growth of 18.1% yoy.

The credit for this growth, of course, does not go to the resurgence in the FMCG sector alone. Dabur has decisively broken away from two legacies that had constrained it in the past – the legacy of family led business and the legacy of a portfolio that predominantly had ayurvedic medicines, which had serious limitations with respect to driving growth. The results are quite visible, with sales growing from Rs.11 billion in FY 2000-01 to Rs.23.96 billion in FY 2007-08, which means a CAGR of 11.76%.
