Infighting within the Maoist party threatens overall stability

All is not going well for Prachanda. Infighting within Nepal's ruling Maoist party has taken an ugly turn with the killing of two men of the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (UML). CPN (UML) is the second largest coalition partner in the Maoist-led dispensation. Following the murders, Kathmandu remained closed for a day and there was protest. Overall, the situation remained quiet, but the tempers are running high. Maoists, who came to power after decades of bloodshed, allege they are being obstructed by vested interests who have blocked Nepal’s transformation into an ideal proletariat society. Senior analyst Soroor Ahmed told B&E, “The hardliners among them are challenging the moderates. The recent clash was the turning point.” The severity of the rift came out in the open during the recently-held meeting of the party Central Committee. Well placed sources say the meeting remained inconclusive as an agreement could not be reached between Prachanda and Mohan Vaidya Kiran, his main rival in the party.

Analysts say that former-guerrilla Prachanda wants to become more democratic by encouraging a multi-party system in Nepal. He favours an economic revolution that can usher in prosperity. Prachanda also wants to rename his party by dropping the Maoist tag. He is doing all this to convince the outside world that he and his men don't favour the use of arms anymore, a catalytic change. However, the man who waged a relentless war against the monarchy as the supreme commander of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) is facing stiff resistance from a disgruntled Kiran, who is arguing that the name of the late Chinese supremo, Mao, cannot be dropped from the party. In this melee, the sufferers remain the three-month-old Maoist government and the voting public who backed them to power.
