Recent reports stating that Bangladeshi students have improved on the GCSEs (General Certificate of Secondary Education) exams vindicate the fact that all is not yet lost about the about cause of South Asia. This piece of news comes as a pleasant surprise especially at a time when Bangladesh as a country is increasingly getting linked only to terrorist activities, be it in South Asia or in faraway lands like the United Kingdom. For long Bangladeshis have migrated to western Europe and USA and considered themselves lucky at the first opportunity of exiting their own country. Yet even in faraway lands he has never been able to rise above doing the petty jobs, mostly in small enterprises and shops often owned by neighbouring Indians. While they toiled, the Indians minted money and climbed up the ladder of social stature. The increasing disparity often led to frustration, the culmination of which has been the increasing involvements of them in terror activities. Education being the way out from such shackles, the improved performance hopefully would inspire the new generation of Bangladeshis-Pakistanis to shun such paths.

Adlabs needs to look at customised pricing for its multiplexes

“We have aggressive new business plans in the services division as well as some promising film releases during the next few quarters,” said CMD Manmohan Shetty while announcing Adlabs’ third quarter results. Unfortunately, due to unexplicable reasons, Manmohan with his daughter & company Director Pooja Shetty are calling it quits. Surely, Adlabs would miss its founder chairman, under whom it has traversed a commendable distance since 1978.

The company is taking its time to decide on the management change. When contacted, the company spokesperson revealed, “No decision has been made yet. At the moment, each division is fairly independent being led by a business head, supported by the company’s CFO.” Surely an issue that would rankle the company till they find a new leader to take over. Nevertheless, as they say, the show has to go on & Adlabs is certainly bracing itself for breakneck expansion now.

For the quarter ended September 30, 2007, Adlabs’ consolidated revenues had a hike of 131% to Rs.1.6 billion, though net profits increased only marginally by 0.4% to Rs.210 million as the company seems to be spending heavily on expansions. The cinema division grew the fastest among the rest by 41% to register revenues of Rs.410 million. ADAG now has 104 screens in India catering to around 20 million movie goers each year. The Adlabs spokesperson said, “At the moment, our focus is on expanding our cinemas chain to be present in all territories that contribute maximum revenues to the box office.” By March 2008 the company expects to have 76 properties with 200 screens & 74,000 seats.

In its all important cinema business unit, Adlabs needs to seriously look at the competitor PVR’s no frills Talkies model, which was launched to cater to remote areas in India. As Adlabs expands its reach in cinemas, it can ill afford to ignore the benefits of a more customised pricing model.

For some, it’s simply a style statement, for others it has become a necessity, yet there are people who simply detest the sight of it. That’s the indisputable saga of tobacco, the world over. Surprisingly, though India is the second largest producer of tobacco in the world (trailing behind China only), it holds a skimpy 0.7% share of the $30 billion global trade in tobacco, with cigarettes accounting for 85% of the country’s total tobacco exports. If one throws some light at the Indian production pattern; of the total tobacco produced, about 48% is in the form of chewing tobacco, 38% as beedis, and only 14% as cigarettes. However, the scenario is entirely different in the rest of the world, where production of cigarettes is 90% of total production of tobacco related products. Undoubtedly, these figures exhibit that India has a huge potential to grow globally, and let the world puff. Currently, two major cigarette players dominate the Indian market. Leading the pack is ITC, with a mind boggling 72% market share. Godfrey Phillips India (GPI) with a miniscule 12% market share lags far behind ITC. But what gives GPI an edge over the other companies in the same industry is its backbone in the form of its stakeholders – the K. K. Modi Group and Philip Morris International. GPI has an annual turnover of over $265 million and boasts of popular brands like Red and White, Four Square, Jaisalmer, Cavanders, Tipper & Prince. GPI believes that sheer determination & passion of every employee, is what is helping them to grow from strength to strength. Arun Kumar, Executive Vice President, GPI told B&E in an exclusive conversation, “We are planning to further expand our product portfolio and enter into many allied business which would steer further growth at GPI.” When a company is planning to grow and set up new divisions, then one of the major challenges for them becomes – ‘Recruiting the right people’. However, GPI firmly believes in grooming personnel from within.

Each time, Airbus or Boeing has sold planes to an existing or new customer, they have laced their offers with sweeteners. In the old days, the incentives included low interest credit and financial help. Later, they shifted non-critical component manufacturing to the buyer nation. Now, competition has forced them to go many miles further. Both have dangled carrots like building MRO (maintenance, repair and overhauling) centres, set up institutions to hone engineering training, or even tie-up with local agencies to pursue futuristic and high-end space and defense research. Don’t think that Airbus & Boeing are doing charity with such ‘extra’ offers. As in the old days, the idea is to further push aircraft sales, or woo new customers. In the current scenario, there’s an additional commercial benefit: as India is being talked about as the new regional hub for aircraft repair and maintenance, as other hubs like Singapore become more expensive, it’s imperative for the aircraft manufacturers to locate new, cost-effective as well as quality hubs in India or China.

According to TAM Ratings, last four weeks average of shows like Comedy Ka King Kaun, Mission Ustad & Dhoom Macha De stood at 0.2, 0.24 & 0.5 respectively. Though Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar, with 2.6 rating is at the top position in its time slot, but the rating in itself is nothing to take home. This leaves us wondering, what is the real success mantra for a reality show?

Albert Almeida, Executive VP, Sony Entertainment Television, states, “Singing and dancing are an integral part of everyone’s life. But each show should have a differentiating factor and novelty of content.” Apart from that, the presentation of the show is also equally important. Mukherjea of INX feels that though entertainment is critical, celebrities add value to the show. However, she adds that “reality shows have to be more innovative to work. Newer formats should be tried.”

It would be incorrect to say that the channels are not ready to experiment. In fact shows like Big Boss and Biggest Loser Jeetega did fairly well because of the newness, which they offered to the audience. Be that as it may, it’s time that channels try newer formats, different from the run-of-the-mill singing, dancing and comedy. The industry is indeed too big and there is space for everyone to co-exist. Surviving on other’s creativity and copying show formats will certainly not help the production houses in the long run. Even RGV’s Aag, which was a futile attempt to re-make Sholay, failed miserably at the box-office. As an entertainer, the primary job of the channels is to provide fresh entertainment to the audience.

However, just like a rubber-band breaks when stretched too far; doomsday for reality, will not be too far... Unless Dr. R is able to think of a brand new aphrodisiac that is.

Shows like Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar (Star TV), Yeh Hai Jalwa (9X) and Ustadon Ka Ustad (Sony), which have roped in winners and also-rans of previous reality shows like Ishmeet Singh, Rahul Vaidya & Rakhi Sawant amongst many, have nothing new to offer in terms of creativity. And in the comic sphere, there is Comedy Ka King Kaun (Sab TV) with the hilarious contestants of the Laughter Challenge. If Zee has Rock-n-Roll Family – a ‘unique’ dance show where three generations of a family come together, judged by celebrity couple Ajay & Kajol, then Sony too has launched Waar Parivaar on similar lines, except that here the families are singing. And adding to the glamour is actress Urmila! Same goes for Mission Ustad (9X) and Dhoom Macha De (NDTV Imagine), which are cashing in on famous singers like Kailash Kher & Jaspinder Narula. In fact, the so-called reality shows have become a hub for long lost actresses like Sonali Bendre, Raveena Tandon and even yesteryear’s actresses like Sharmila Tagore and Tanuja to make a come back.

Not only this, even our esteemed judges and anchors are raking in a lot of moolah. So once Sa Re Ga Ma ended, the musical duo Vishal & Shekhar shifted to Jo Jeeta Wohi Superstar. Even our laughing buddha, Navjot Singh Sidhu is judging Funjabi Chak De, while Shekhar Suman is currently sharing the judge’s seat with Javed Akhtar and Saroj Khan in Ustadon Ke Ustad.

The above synopsis clearly proves that the channels are just not ready to experiment with new and creative formats. Agrees noted film maker, Kunal Kohli, “The reality shows are indeed being monotonous and stretched a lot these days. But if the audiences are liking it that way, then there is no reason why channels should sway away from them.” But are audiences really liking the shows or has the fatigue set in?
